Cane types (self.Blind)
submitted by Westonvt
Hi. I did some very basic training with a friend who is legally blind. He has several types of canes so I could try to get a feel for what I like. The cane given by NFB is very light but its cumbersome to store/handle in different settings. I liked the folding ones for my type of visual impairment. I do not need a cane constantly so a folding one that I can put in my bag when not in use is ideal instead of the standard non folding.
I was browsing on amazon but I'm not sure if that is a proper site to purchase one? I'm hoping for a cheaper version of the 60$+ I've seen many go for but tend to see just children's ones that max at 42 inches. I'd also prefer a roller tip over marshmallow tip but I can adjust to what is available or the cheapest option.

Hi, the NFB store has the NFB's cane in a collapsable model.

I recommend Ambutech. They have conical tips on each segment which makes them super easy to fold and unfold, and they also have replaceable tips. One thing to keep in mind is that a rolling tip, which Ambutech offers, will add a noticeable amount of mass to your cane. This results in more inertia when sweeping it back and forth. If you prefer constant contact, this would be the best way to go. Stay away from aluminium canes. They're significantly heavier than graphite canes.

Hi! I’ve gotten mine online in the past from ambutech. They are great quality and customisable for Colors/tips/length and all the things you’d need. I’m in the US and shipping did take a few weeks from Canada but that could have been due to covid.
