Any brain/vision researchers in the thread? How do systems like this actually work? Does the camera send signals to areas of the brain that would interpret information that is usually indexed as intact retinotopy patterns? Is it only sending signals into the visual cortex , or would other cortical areas like parts of the dorsal and ventral stream also be part of the stimulated areas?

The user wears headgear with a camera. The camera sends the signal to a vision processor (and related software) which then is sent to an array of electrodes implanted into the brain itself. The article regarding the system (Gennaris bionic vision system) does mention a wireless transmitter, which seems to be for sending the signals to the chip in the brain.
It doesn't specify where exactly they are implanting it in the brain, but they do mention they should be able to implant multiple chips to cover a larger area.
I don't have my retina developed due to premature birth, would this help me?

As one with severely under-developed optic nerves who has zero vision in my right eye, this is very fascinating. I'd totally try this out once I know it's safe. Even if it only gave me a little extra vision, that would be just fine.

Absolutely, my optic nerves with 99% atrophy in both eyes agree. This sounds very promising and makes me hoepful that I'll see the world one day.

I wonder how expansive this will be? This is pretty incredible!

If neuralink can figure out something that'll give me my vision back, I will throw all of my money at them
