I’ve not been diagnosed with any eye conditions, but as a person with Health Anxiety i am kinda going paranoid about Macular Degeneration or Retinal Detachment as i use Mobile/Computer a lot and the blue light is harmful. I am asking this simply to put myself at ease. (self.Blind)

As a sighted person who works with children who are blind, this question is pretty invasive in a sub meant to be a support and safe space for people who are blind/visually impaired.

If you are that concerned with these things, then go do some research on your own. Look into orientation and mobility, look into occupational rehab/ therapy. Check out the National Federation for the Blind's website and resources.

Start googling blind lifters, gamers, chefs, check out goal ball and other adaptive games.
If you're THAT concerned then you need to go do your own research. Its not blind folks' job to assuage your fears.

Molly Burke's channel on YT is a great place to start.

Edit: and reconsider using phrases like "can we navigate easily." You're not blind and every blind persons experience is different. No one can answer what your experience would be IF you ever experienced visual impairment.

If this breaks rules. Please remove. I apologize.

Well i was asking for experience not a solution. I was asking if blind people can exercise, play games etc. where would i ask those things? Because Google didn’t give the result i was looking for.

I am not blind already and wanted to know how it feels like to live so after having vision before. Thats why i asked here.

And ‘navigate easily’ was used from the perspective of a person who loses vision due to MD or RD. Most of the people who went blind due to these problems had vision before so i just asked to know about it. Sorry again.

I will try to help alleviate some anxieties. I know this can be scary. First, I will start with retinal detachment. Retinal detachment from computers and screens is caused by the eye being so elongated that the retina cannot take the strain. This does not typically happen with adults. The elongation of the eye typically happens in childhood. But there are surgeries to reattach the retina as best they can.

Ultimately, it is very likely you will keep some amount of residual sight, but I cannot say how much.

Mascular degeneration will cause clouding because of retinal deterioration. This happens to typically older people, 40 and up.

There may be some challenges adjusting. In our current world, visual videogames aren't the most accessible. There have been a few instances of being able to change color schemes and elsewhere the text. But as a person who is legally blind, I play videogames with a big tv and being close to it. I like a lot of rpg games, but I struggle with fps games. I have several blind spots, which will be common for retinal detachment.

Lifting can easily be done even if you are totally blind. It may be helpful to have someone spot you as needed. You have muscle memory from being sighted. The sensations may feel different, but the movement will stay the same. Someone to help you refine those without using your eyes may help, but it's not needed.

You can re-learn to play guitar. It will be harder without the visual feedback of knowing finger placement, but I know several blind musicians. A piano player, a drummer, a guitarist, and me, a guitarist.

Travel will be different it you are not longer legally able to drive. Thankfully, there are entire fields for rehabilitation and mobility! You may learn to use other tools and larger print, you may use audio books, learn to safely travel areas you need, and learn how to shop if you have less sight.

Many blind adults (either who were born blind or lost their sight) are successful with working at their jobs. I have a friend who works for Apple and just moved from California to Colorado. There are services to help pack and deliver things. One of my mentors is a mother of two, a professor at a university, and regularly trains for marathons.

It is all possible! You will make it and be successful

Thanks a lot sir! I am still not sure if its just health anxiety or the real problem but this is very positive to hear.

But does Retinal detachment happen like that? I’ve asked many ODs and other Docs and they’ve all said screen use can’t cause detachment. And it has more to do with the vitreous tugging on retina or a tear. Elongation of eyes i think leads to Myopia, but yes High Myopia is a risk factor for RD.

Macular Degen however is linked to Blue light. Which is also found in phones. Thats where the concern is.

Thats good news. :) because i have learnt to play guitar already. And know Karate too. Muscle Memory shall help me i guess, like you said.

I guess i’d skip traveling in case i go blind. But videogames would be a big loss . :(

Thats really inspiring. Thanks again.

I'm a woman :)

You will be able to live a full life even without sight.

So I'm not a doctor, but I work asa teacher for visually impaired students. I had to do some research on this before getting back to you. Mac D has minor correlation to blue light, but that isn't a causation yet; I personally haven't found any research to show the correlation yet.

We are in an interesting time where people are starting to have screens most of their life. I don't think enough research will happen until they can make a statement of causation to more retinal detachments. I also don't believe even 10 hours a day at a computer or phone will cause either retinal damage or mac D. I cannot say that as a professional because the research I've seen doesn't seem to support either claim.

The reality of being blind is that only 10% of all people who have low vision (20/70-worse) are totally blind. You would have a great chance to keep residual vision that you would learn to use.

Maybe try some of those apps which dim or redden the screen, especially at night. Also there are "AREDS 2" vitamins for eye health. For me, it was 'posterior vitreous detachment'; and nobody said it was related to computer use. I did work with a guy who had MD. He still had *some* vision, and accomodations, and at the time I thought it might have been somehow related to his woodworking hobby.

I think the problem here is your anxiety, not the potential for a future eye condition. You say you don’t have any diagnoses vision issues — in that case, you really don’t have a reason to worry. We all use computers and phones a lot, and while they may contribute to age-related decline in vision, there’s no reason to think that you in particular will be disproportionately affected. Most people will be just fine, or maybe need glasses it need to use some screen magnification, as they get older. You’re only 18, and it is statistically overwhelmingly likely that you will not have anything to worry about for a long, long time. So rather than dealing with very unlikely impending vision loss, I would focus on your anxiety issues.

That being said — by all means, inform yourself about how people who are blind do things if you are interested. It will make you a better ally and advocate for inclusion.
