How does one get involved with blind sports? (self.Blind)
submitted by feckinthrowawayacc
Just curious. I already do sports, but I'm curious about sports teams and organizations geared specifically towards blind and VI people.

Check out Goalball. It’s a Paralympic sport specifically designed for the blind.

Beap baseball is quite cool. Google and you'll probably find info about it. I know people that don't have a team near them, but they practice at home and prepare to play in turnaments with teams that need players. They have world championships every year.

I note from one of your other posts you're based in the USA, so I'm not sure how helpful my advice will be. I understand sports are run quite a bit differently in over there than here (Australia).

That said, first thing you should do is identify sports you're interested in. Then research if there are accessible forms of that sport. Then find your local club. Depending on the sport it could be a blind/VI club, or a club open to everyone.

For example, say you like soccer. You read up and find out about blind soccer. Then you look for your nearest blind soccer club. Perhaps there'll be connections through your local blindness organisation. Or you could contact the national or state body for the sport (as in the blind version of the sport).

Another example is archery. You look into how blind archery is performed and look into what equipment you'll need. Then you make contact with your local club to discuss coming along and getting involved. In this case the club will likely not be blind specific.

You could also ask on this sub about specific sports. I'm sure there are people here who're involved in sports you may be interested provided you identify a few sports you might be keen on first.

If you'd like some ideas of sports that have accessible forms for people who're blind/VI: archery, (beep) baseball, cricket, cycling, goal ball (a specific blind/VI game), lawn bowls, running, shooting, soccer,

swimming, ten pin bowling. I'm sure there are more besides.
