Are there any other products that do a similar thing? I've never heard of such myself.

Next time a student comes looking for a project tell them to design a new version of the Optacon using 3D printed parts, an off the shelf micro board like the Arduino or Raspberry PI, and open source the software and designs.
Next get a charity to underwrite the manufacture and sale of these along with training and support.

It's a good idea, but unfortunately I don't think you can 3D print the needed piezoelectrics and metal rods. :(
I really wish there was something like this out today. I saw one as a kid and the noise it made scared the pants off me. But looking back I am fascinated by what the technology could do.

In the UK you could for a time buy a talking digital radio receiver. It featured:
- very clear hiss free digital DAB radio reception - tactile controls, station presets, menu buttons, volume knob, tuning knob, with both tactile and spoken feedback - station names announced as you tuned the radio - touch sensitive handle, one tap to snooze alarm or announce the current time, two taps to announce the alarm settings - voice feedback for the menus allowing the alarms to be set and other settings to be listened to and changed - high quality speech
Again, if anyone wants to develop a DIY kit that would offer the same functionality, sound quality and ease of use by VI listeners, I think there would be a demand whether it supports either or both DAB or IP radio stations.

what has the Sonus radio - which I presume you are referencing - to do with the original post?

It is another example of an orphaned technology without a comparable alternative to take its place.
Pure only made and sold them for what seemed like a short time. Perhaps they made only one production run. They only released one software update and the correct naming of the stations depend on this, so when you tune through the station list many of them are announced as "Unknown" or with the old station name, e.g. BBC Radio 4 extra is still announced as BBC Radio 7.
