Brewing beer blind (self.Blind)
submitted by appollo2020
Hey folks!
Recently I have started brewing beer and was wondering if any other blind or visually impaired individuals do the same? Would love to get tips on reading gravity/using a hydrometer or refractometer. would also just love to find any other people who brew anything, be at kombucha, wine, cider or Meade.
Thanks!

I've started brewing, and also brew kombucha. I just got three pounds of clover honey ready to go for mead, though I might hold off until I get that brewing itch again. Just recently pressed three bushels of apples into four gallons of juice, and I'm making cider.

Getting the readings is the hardest part from a low vision perspective. There are expensive gizmos you can drop in to get the ABD and all that, which might be the way to go. You can read the temp and ABD on your phone after you've added the gizmo to the brew. I haven't shelled out the bucks yet.

I also don’t think I’ve actually ever tried mead before

That’s awesome! I have heard of the tilt, but, I’m not quite sure if I’m ready to shell out $150 for it yet though.
I would love to try doing cider sometime let me know how that turns out! Was it hard pressing that many apples?
Right now I’m just focusing on Brewing a good beer and focusing on stouts.

Cider is easy except for pressing the apples. Unlike beer there aren't a lot of steps during the brewing process. My dad loves mechanical stuff and after I told him about brewing some cider from store-bought stuff he bought a press. He loves pressing the apples, though it was half a day's work to get those four gallons. I say if you're totally blind it might not be worth it unless you're really into mechanics.

I too am totally blind. This sounds very cool! Can you tell me how you got started? How did your first batch come out? Is it expensive to start brewing your own beer?
Thank you

I’m still waiting for my first batch to ferment completely to put it into bottles. It can be a little bit expensive to start but it really all depends on how much money you’re willing to put into it. I’ve put in about $160 in that get me a pretty decent set up. After that depending on how you decide to brew and how much you drink beer it can save you money in the long run
If you’re interested reading about how to get started I would recommend brew better beer by Emma Christensen and for a more fun book that talks about a major brewery, brew dog by Richard Taylor is good

You can buy a kit. You can get start for around $100, I'd say, though you may want some more stuff that might run another $100 or $200. It's fun and kind of relaxing. I recommend trying kombucha brewing first, as it's easier and also pretty fun. All you need is a 1 gallon glass jar and a SCOBY, or culture, which you get get on Amazon.

It's pricey but they do make a $1 that hooks up to an app on your phone so you might be able to use whatever your standard screen reader is with it.

Also if you haven't found them yet try cross posting to /r/homebrewing, I'd bet people would have ideas.

Thank you! It looks like a really cool idea, but, I think I’m going to wait a little bit before I shell out that much money for it.
