I'm 16 and I have a visual acuity of 20/700 (left) and 20/800 (right) without prescripted glasses. Can I get contact lenses? more importantly, will I go blind before I hit 18? (self.Blind)

I'm a digital artist and I plan to make a living out of art in the future, but the possibility of losing my eyesight someday haunts me. I started having vision problems since I was 8 but I only got checked by a professional when I turned 10. We got the results and turns out I was suffering with astigmatism, nearsightedness, and at high risk of retinal detachment. I didn't really think much of it back then, but now that I'm getting older, I'm starting to realise how detrimental this is to my future and potentially my career, so the question comes to mind, will I go blind before I turn 18? And will I ever retire from my thick heavy lenses?

We can't tell you if/when you'll go blind because 1) we just don't know enough about your vision condition because we're not your ophthalmologist and 2) we can't accurately predict the future. However, I think it would be good to ask your ophthalmologist this question so you can start thinking about alternative careers you might be interested in if going blind soon is a real possibility.

As CloudyBeep says, the best person to ask is your ophthalmologist. However, I’m also at risk of retinal detachment. While it’s unlikely in my case they can do much due to damage already in my eyes, in other cases retinal detachment is not the end of the world. If you speak to your ophthalmologist, they can tell you signs to look out for, and if it ever does happen you know what it is and can get it sorted in time for treatment to make a difference. It’s hard not to worry about these things, but I’ve been high risk since I was born and there’s no signs of it yet!

I know it’s kinda terrifying. I’ve had to face losing more vision in my early 20s when I thought just a year ago I was stable. But even with more vision loss I can still do digital art (badly, but that’s my art skills, not my eyes!)

And if you still worry about if you’ll end up not being able to do art as your career, pick up another hobby to do alongside art that you might enjoy and can do even while blind. That way you have a backup and something to keep you sane if it does happen.
