Here's very interesting webinar about current state of retinal gangelion cells and optical nerves repair and replacement advancement its very well explained why its so hard to repair anything with stem cells and possible timeline for first clinical human trials:

Hi I am registered Severely Sight Impaired (Blind) in the UK, with optic atrophy - basically nerve damage.

I have been following Project Gennaris for some time, which basically a brain implant linked to glasses that pass the eyes altogether. Stem cell replacements seem way off compared to this.
