Idk if this fits here but... (self.Blind)
submitted by HanaS14
As a child, I temporarily lost my sight. It only lasted a week, but I recall the experience vividly. Basically, while having a family gathering at my mom's house, I was watching television when suddenly everything went dark. I opened my eyes and it was incredibly blurry.

I remember blinking quickly and rubbing my eyes but nothing worked, so I stumbled to the kitchen screaming that I couldn't see. Fast forward to my mother driving to some doctor somewhere. Obviously I couldn't identify where we were, but I remember the doctor telling me to stare into what I could tell was a purple light through the blur. I was told to stare into it for 10 seconds and afterwards, I was given a rag to wipe my eyes.

When I opened them, I could see clearly again and the rag was covered in something yellow from when I wiped my eyes. After that, I went home and there hasn't been a problem with my eyesight since. So, I guess what I'm asking is, does anyone have any idea as to what I experienced? I didn't go through surgery or anything, it was literally like they shined a radiation light into my eyes and I could see again.

Did I go blind? There was no issues with my eye sight leading up to the moment everything went dark. My mom passed when I was still young and she was the only other person in the room with me during the procedure, so I don't really have anyone else who could explain exactly what happened.

If anyone knows what it could have been, please tell me. I've been clueless for years. Thank you :)

This is interesting

I once "lost my vision" due to dangerously low blood pressure. I was at a store and my vision went and I was about to faint. I quickly ran outside and lied down on the sidewalk and my vision came back. I don't even know how I did it, must of been my adrenaline. I wouldn't call it "going blind" but it was definitely scary.

That sounds scary :( it's a good thing you acted quickly!

Yup! But now I'm legally blind due to generics lol still better than losing all my vision like I did back then.

You might be able to search the medical records through the hospital if you can find that

I'll definitely get on that! This uncertainty has lasted for too long. Thank you! :)

I had a similar experience when I was a kid!
One day while watching TV, all the sudden my vision went completely black.
My parents took me to the doctor, and on the drive there my vision returned. They ran all kinds of tests but we still have no idea why I went temporarily blind.

Will do, thanks! :)

Was it $1? It notes that the dye is orange, but I've noticed it having a yellowish color when it gets wiped onto tissues.

This sounds somewhat similar to what I experienced. This did occur when I was a child, so it's possible that I wasn't fully aware of everything that went on to conduct this test, but the light shining and yellow residue left on the rag is exactly what I remember. I don't recall having to take drops or anything like that, but I can definitely see how my vision might have been effected due to me constantly sitting close to the television screen and probably not blinking very frequently. Wow. Thank you so much for this! :D

I had a couple moments of my vision going really snowy when I was young but it was momentary and self corrected. The sudden darkness thing reminds me of when I was pregnant and got really dehydrated. I had the whole fainting / seeing black etc in waves until I was hydrated again. I’d ask your GP they should be able to give insight.

The dehydration thing makes sense. If I don't drink any water or eat anything for too long (usually a result of me being busy and forgetting to eat), my vision will start to get foggy and I'll keep having to blink or rub my eyes, so that let's me know to quickly put something in my system. I'll definitely speak to my GP though! Thanks :)

I would say you did not go blind. You had an experience of visual impairment. One of the features that makes blindness blindness is that it does not go away.

I would argue that this is incorrect in a broad sense. Ideally yes, but we have people with optic neuritis, who have inflammation of their optic nerves and fluctuation of vision. Functionally, they may be blind for periods of time.

I think that could have been very low/very high pressure. I’ve only had issues with high pressure, but it randomly made me go totally blind (with a massive headache as a bonus) until the doctor put in eyedrops in there to lower it. That might be what happened?
