Filling in Forms (self.Blind)
submitted by oncenightvaler
So imagine you are at the doctor's office and the receptionist has forms for you to fill out. But you are alone without a guide or friend.

Normally this would not be a problem for me and I would politely ask the receptionist if she can take a few moments to help me fill in these by reading to me and I can dictate the answers.

The receptionist in question was surprised that I did not have a guide with me to help me with these forms and was offended and put out by having to take time out of her busy schedule to help me. What only made this worse was apparently I was not speaking clearly enough through the disinfectant mask and had to clarify phonetic spellings a few times.

Too bad for her? You did nothing wrong. They provided inaccessible forms, and you're blind, so they needed to fill them out. End of story. Don't feel guilty.

Yes it happens. Was it a new place, have you been there before with seeing person? Was it very busy time? Lots of well seeing under stress people are forgetting that theres spectrum between fully blind and low vision and those maybe won't be able to fill out forms and such things as magnification glass or glasses wouldn't help at all. In such situations calm short clarification of the situation is needed. Or not always we can organize a sighted guide even in advance.
If this was appointment was made in advance maybe a short notice beforehead if you go there first time so staff won't be surprised and have time to help. If you have any rest of vision use your smartphone: OCR apps + headphones There's other solutions but more pricey like OrCam devices or coming up EnvisionGlasses (they're wanting to develop more devices too). There are in my country helpful cards size of credit card with rectangle hole in the middle its to write inside your name and surname in standard size but I use it too to fill out all kind of forms too. In local blind schools it was very important point of rehabilitation for fully blind to learn to write with normal pen with big bold capital letters to sign in documents and fill out forms as much as it was possible with this square card cut out they trained even for months.

Yes, totally blind, yes it was my first time, I was just pleased with myself by making it there without ending up on the wrong street.

Sounds like you just had a bitchy receptionist. I'm in the same boat myself. Looking for a new doctors office because of it tbh. If you have the means I'd look for a new place to go to, but I do understand transportation and other factors can make it difficult.

she was a straight up asshole. It doesn’t take more than like 2 minutes to fill a form. I worked as a front desk receptionist for a bit, and honestly I wasn’t doing shit for 90% of the time, I’m sure she could havé spared the couple minutes.

You did absolutely nothing wrong. She just doesn’t know how to be a decent human being. Sorry that this happened to you :/ but please know it’s not your fault
