Virtual Reality Simulator (self.Blind)
submitted by FriendofaBlindPerson
Hello all, I am a non-visually disabled engineering student who is starting a project with my visually disabled roommate Kayla. Kayla and I have been best friends for 6+ years and she has been looking to do something to make an impact in the visually disabled community. One of the first things she showed me when we met was a simulator her mobility specialist scrapped together out of a pair of welding glasses, a magnifying lens in one eye socket and a piece of duck tape covering the other lens. It was suppose to best we could demonstrate what her vision looked like with no depth perception and 20/200 vision. This was an amazing tool for her to communicate to me and it became the basis for far more dialogue. My idea for her was to build a better simulator. A simulator that could be customized to demonstrate nuances of disability(Especially the range of blindness people experience). A simulator that would be dynamic meaning that in a VR space I could show a sighted person the difficulty in navigating a space with a disability. Then show what small changes in the environment can be made to make mobility easier for people who actually struggle with the disability. I mostly want to hear your opinions and perspectives about what to make sure I include or should consider. My friend and I want to incorporate as much real perspective from people who struggle with these disabilities so that they are communicated accuracy. Please either DM to volunteer for an interview or leave me a comment to let me know what you think.

I don’t want to be a Karen, but I would suggest using the word “impaired” instead of disabled. Disabled literally means not able and just because we don’t have sight doesn’t mean we can’t do what fully sighted people can. Just some food for thought. This project is really cool though!!

Thank you! and I will keep that in mind. My friend identifies with the prior but I will work to improve my understandings as I gain more perspectives.

I've seen apps that can do this (basically simulate different eye conditions, using the phone's camera for augmented reality). Were you thinking of something similar, but connected to a set of googles?

Who would this device be targeted to?

Huh, would have thought a fresh account would have been used. Guess I can’t be too surprised though, I assume this is not for a supervised school project?

There's an app by the Braille institute that has a similar concept using a phone camera. So that might be a good reference.

And this actually sounds really awesome to be because you could have VR that can display several ways blind ppl see.

For me everything beyond a certain distance (is just watercolor painting aesthetic). No definite shapes or details. But blurry hints of what something is. A tv is a black square kinda thing. But if it's about an inch from my eye I can read and see small details.

Really great idea you got going. Would love to see it come to fruition
