Seeking participants to share experience/insight on board game accessibility! (self.Blind)
submitted by abolesni
Hello my name is Adrian Bolesnikov and I'm a Masters student at Carleton University in Ottawa Canada and am doing a research project on the experiences of people with visual impairment using board and card games. We want to explore the experiences of people with vision impairments playing board and card games, topics ranging from barriers faced when playing them to methods you have used to make your own games more accessible!

Participation involves:

* A 60-minute interview that does not present any risk to participants
* Notes will be taken during the interview and audio recordings will be encouraged. You will have the opportunity to withdraw your consent from being recorded.
* Data will be stored on password-protected computers only accessible to the research team.

Eligibility:

* Vision impaired (blind or low vision)
* 18 years of age or older
* Comfortable with the English language
* No level of board game experience is required, if you have any experiences or information you would like to share we would like to hear!

Interviews will take place via participants' choice of online platform (e.g. Zoom, Google Meet) or by Phone. Participants will also be compensated for their time with a $25 e-gift card of your choosing, with the default option being from Amazon.

If interested, email Adrian Bolesnikov at $1 for more details!

The ethics protocol for this project has been reviewed and cleared by the Carleton University Research Ethics Board, CUREB-B Clearance #114501. If you have any ethical concerns with the study, please contact the Carleton University Research Ethics Board-B (by phone at 613-520-2600 ext. 4085 or via email at $1)

Hello there,

I am the host of a podcast called Sightless Fun where we talk about board and card game accessibility for the blind and visually impaired. You can find the podcast at https://sightless.fun/podcast/

I am sure you will be able to gather a lot of information from the interviews I've done on the podcast. If you would like to arrange an interview with me, please send me a private message.

I have nystagmus and peripheral retina scaring. My family and I play board games a lot.

SUBMITTED!

Hi, I don’t think I personally can participate bc I have typical vision, but some of my family members with lower vision struggle with colors in some board games — they’re not color blind, it’s just their poor vision overall (cataracts in one case, kerataconus in another) make it hard for them to discriminate orange from red in some board games, that’s the specific color pair that games often have the worst, like the colored dice in Sagrada for example.

So I just wanted to mention color aspects as something to keep on your radar even for mostly-sighted people. :)
