Tools to help a friend (self.Blind)
submitted by CraftsyHooker
Hello fellow redditors! My parents have a friend (around 80) who’s very dear to me too. He used to love writting letters and nice words for people and being on his computer.

Now his sight is so degraded that he can’t do those things anymore and he’s very depressed and distressed about the day things.

I would love so much to help him even just a little bit. So I ask you if there are tools/devices to help him gain back some pleasure doing things (like a special magnifier or so). Thanks in advance for your kind help

P.S: sorry for my english, it’s not my first language

Learn screen readers. On windows you have jaws and nvda on mac and iphones you have voice over and the ipad you have voice over as well.

It is for my own knowledge. Unfortunately if I have to be honest with you, our friend is now so down that he can’t even go to the bathroom on his own. Dementia has set in. But anyway thanks for taking time to answer me

I am so sorry to hear. And that’s not good dementia is hard. Yeah, learning something new may not be possible now. Maybe just company and being there with him.

https://www.enhancedvision.com/low-vision/cctv-magnifiers.html

A CCTV can help magnify things and he can still write, but it would depend on how much usable vision he has. The machines can also be expensive, although some places do have some coverage through the health care system.

Another option (depending on vision) is to use a felt-tip marker. It would be much larger on the page, but it may help him read a bit more when writing.

That’s a great device! Thank you very much for your help. Hope it’s not too late (that he’s too far into depression) for him to try using it
