Am I a terrible person if this thought crosses my mind?(self.Blind)
submitted by Nefilimulalchimist
During this period, I sometimes wonder what would happen if a new virus blinded most of the Earth's population.
Although I realize very well that this would certainly mean the end of the world, I can't help but feel a thrill of satisfaction.
Don't get me wrong, I don't want this world to end and I'm not depressed.
I am blind from birth and I have become accustomed to my condition, if I may say so, but sometimes I feel disadvantaged compared to normal people.
What do you think, is it really so bad that I have that momentary satisfaction?

I like to refer to people as "currently sighted." It makes them nervous.

I'm gonna use this too. This is beautiful

You are a human, and sometimes weird thoughts will come to your mind. As long as you don’t wish evil upon another and don’t try to harm anyone you don’t have to worry about them.
You aren’t a bad person just because you have some weird thoughts. Have a nice day!

There is a novel with this very premise: Blindness, by Jose Saramago
From Wikipedia: *Blindness* is the story of an unexplained mass epidemic of $1 afflicting nearly everyone in an unnamed city, and the social breakdown that swiftly follows. The novel follows the misfortune of a handful of unnamed characters who are among the first to be stricken with blindness, including "the doctor's wife", her husband, several of his patients, and assorted others, who are thrown together by chance. After a lengthy and traumatic quarantine in an asylum, the group bands together in a family-like unit to survive by their wits and by the unexplained good fortune that the doctor's wife has escaped the blindness. The sudden onset and unexplained origin and nature of the blindness cause widespread panic, and the social order rapidly unravels as the government attempts to contain the apparent contagion and keep order via increasingly repressive and inept measures.

Sounds like very cool book I don’t know if I like fiction but that sounds interesting.

It's honestly one of the best books I've ever read. Highly recommended

It would prove my point that everyone should advocate for disability rights because I we are all at risk of becoming disabled at any moment of our life. I mean, before I got diagnosed, I had that young mentality that stuff like that won't happen to me, but here we are.
I agree, I want a moment where people realize how hard life is like this and how we need to adapt to match everyone's needs.

There is another novel about this called _The Day of the Triffids_. The BBC also did an audio dramatization of it, and there is also a good audio version available.

Nah I think its just a morbid sense of humor, maybe. I'll admit I'm blind myself and never had this thought, specifically about a blind-everyone virus, but i can get why you have that little part of you that feels that way. We are disadvantaged. I don't believe in all that support group crap, that fluffy, false motivational bullshit. Most things we do in life are a workaround. And yeah, it sucks. The difference between one person and another is whether they let it cripple them or not. The world just isn't designed for us in mind. And personally I'm not mad at that. Only thing I ask for is to be respected and treated like a human being. I make records and you have no idea how much I wish I could use some of this equipment, the MPC Live mk2 looks badass but it doesn't have a TTS mode on it. Can't use it. Mildly frustrating, but I find another way. I personally believe that I have a disability. I would find it kind of funny, if some prick who wanted to pop shit about blind folk all of a sudden ended up blind, you know, shoots his eye out with his pellet gun because he's just that kind of guy. But I'm a person that have seen how ignorant and stupid some people willfully are, I've gotten treated like trash in relationships (which are way too overrated), etc. So maybe I'm just a little embittered by that, pessimism, etc.

I would read/audiobook Jose Saramago’s Blindness. Portuguese author. It’s literally about a post apocalyptic world in which most of humanity is plagued by blindness.

I think there is a series on Apple TV about this.
Superfreq23 points2y ago
I think most blind people have thought this at some point. It would be a very different world for sure...
SJGM2 points2y ago
There is already a post apocalyptic tv show with that exact premise. Quite good.

I get angry too. And post-apoc is my favorite kind of fiction or movie or book to enjoy. I also wonder about a virus blinding peoples. Especially people I can't stand. Like Trump!
The people of earth would have no idea what to do! And just think of all of the scrambling they'd FINALLY do to make things easier or more accessible for the blind!
Until then, my friend, all we have is each other. :-) And our secret thoughts.
I wish someone would write a book on this topic. I would pre-order it for sure!
blindchickruns2 points2y ago
I just rest assured knowing most people could not handle living one day in my shoes. They would be in the ER before lunch.
ira_finn2 points2y ago
Why would the world end?? It's blindness, not death. Surely people would adjust.
I'm also not sure why you would feel satisfied by this happening unless you thought of blindness as some kind of.... Punishment? On some level? At least a punishment for the shitty way sighted people act.
Idk, at any rate, I don't think this is a weird line of thought.

There's a book with such a premis. Blindness by José Saramago.
RJHand2 points2y ago
Oh man this is some bird box shit.
Winnmark2 points2y ago
A virus that makes 30%+ of the population blind?
Lol, sounds like a good TV pilot.

Haha! Interesting thoughts. Mass panic is what I thought of when I read your post.
