Interviews on how machine learning can improve web accessibility for people that are blind (self.Blind)
submitted by phantom-swan
We are a group of senior engineering students that are creating a machine learning algorithm to help improve accessibility on the web. Our work is collaborating across multiple institutions and has a high likelihood of being adopted into assistive tech long term. Currently, we are exploring which usability issues affect blind individuals most to determine what specific problem we should work to solve with this project.

If you would be interested is doing an interview to tell us about what works for you on the web and what needs improvement, we would love to hear from you! Interviews are 45 minutes long and will take place over zoom.

We would love to hear about your opinions and experiences, so that we can help build the assistive tech that you want. To schedule an interview or ask any questions about this project, email $1. Thanks!

Has anyone else gotten a response from u/phantom-swan yet?
I was excited to contribute to this but it's now been a week and a half and still nothing...

You’ve got all your info on the internet.

As much as I like helping people you can just type in making a website work with a screen reader you’ll find tuns of stuff.

This is specifically about the machine learning aspect though... And that isn't something you can so easily find good data about.

True.

Is there any current or planned commercial component to this research? If so, will some form of compensation be provided for our time and unique perspective?

Nothing really, except some sites I can't navigate such as Cloudflare, LinkedIn to name a couple.

Only thing I can think of is broaden the scope of the project and include sighted folks to. Utilize NLP so you can just say / type, "login to my namecheap account and register the domain $1", and voila, it's done. Or, "login to server xyz and upload file cutecats.jpg to /home/mike".

Now being able to do things like that would be cool.
