POLL: Favorite Blind Character? (self.FavoriteCharacter)

Toph is awesome but I take the position that she's one of those blind characters who isn't really blind, same with daredevil. Writers seem to work on the basis the only way these people can have proper involvement with the story is to give them some sort of nice easy way out. Yeah, okay, sometimes Toph gets a wrestling belt in the face or asks someone what's on a piece of paper, but it seems to be calculated so that she gets to be blind enough to have all those cute moments, but not so blind it really stops her doing anything. For the sake of comparison I'm blind and I don't have special powers and it does stop me doing things.

I think the closest I've come to a blind character I actually liked was Murphy Mason from In the Dark. There were a minimum of cringe moments, all down to the writing not the acting, and she had a decently hedonistic attitude. The fact she isn't some sort of perfect angel is great. They show her doing stuff that I feel like a lot of people couldn't do, like going to some apartment block where she's never been before and somehow finding someone's place on her own, but her attitude is generally pretty spot on.

After making this poll, I immediately regretted not including Murphy.

I think Toff is a good representation of a low vision person, not a totally blind person. I'm very low vision, but can navigate around pretty well like Toff, but with no central vision have similar issues with reading, computers, faces, distance, and in special circumstances. I also do feel like I have special powers in a way, as I'm a technologist and I have a lot of infrastructure that I've created for myself, and some social capabilities that are somewhat unusual. Confusing because Toff is described as totally blind in the show, but her capabilities are more in line with a low vision person.

I’ve actually not read books with actual blind characters so I don’t know but interesting.... so don’t know. But besides clasics I read a lot more nonfiction so yeah.

Should I feel like I'm not a true blind person if I haven't heard of some of these characters?

Hahaha not at all! I tried to think of the 5 most notable ones in fiction, but even then, some are a little obscure.

Just goes to show the lack of representation for blindness in media.

Can you tell me a little about them and what they're from? (I think everyone knows about Daredevil, and I also know about ATLA).

Honestly, I really don’t know much about the others. Kenshi from Mortal Kombat is a blind fighter, Eli is an action hero who turns out to be blind, and Zatochi is a classic literary/film figure I think.

After Toph and Daredevil, I was really just grasping at straws.

I can’t wait to read this piece. Thank you for sharing it with me!
