Anybody else here an artist with Retinitis Pigmentosa who have had cataracts surgery (self.Blind)
submitted by TheVenomChild
If so did it in any way improve your artwork (sketching/painting) and vision in general? I'm 20 and am starting to treuggle with a lot of traditional mediums (mostly light linework and pencil and charcoal, pen and ink is a little better) and was wondering if the cateracts is affecting my artistic ability more than my retinitis pigmentosa.

When I started loosing my sight I switched from 1D mediums to 3D so I could feel everything instead

I actually got into a pretty good school for dress making despite having even less vision now!!

I didn't have surgery for cataracts and going in I knew it probably wouldn't improve my vision, however, even just straining my eyes less has improved my work!!

If you count crafting as art, yes. At the time though my eyes were far better than they are right now. Just be warned that with cataract surgery, those of us that have RP are more likely to have swelling after surgery. There is a drug they put you on for a month I believe it's the same drug they use for high altitude sickness, but it reduces swelling on your eyes it's a pretty heavy duty diuretic.

At the time when I had the cataract surgery I was doing a lot of cross stitch. It was a lot easier to notice the difference between colors even by the littlest bit.

Is this UK or US healthcare?

US. You might have different opinions on drugs if you are in the UK.

Ahh...

We usually have drops after cateracts surgery
in the UK

Same here. Then after a week you go back to check to see how everything is healing. That check is when they find whether or not your eyes have swollen. That is when you would have any measures to deal with the swelling. Remember RP just makes you more likely to have swelling it does not guarantee that your eyes will swell.

Diamox/acetazolamide?

Sounds about right. My body doesn't like that drug. It flushes electrolytes out of my body to the point where I'm just above hospitalization stage. If I don't do something like drink Gatorade while I'm on that drug I pass out.

I took 3000mg a day of it for a few years because of my neurological condition and believe me, I feel you on that. I basically lived off potatoes and kids fruit juice to get my potassium and other vitamins and minerals I was peeing out constantly

Oh God for a few years? My hands and feet tingled the whole time I was on that drug. Every carbonated beverage tasted like metal. I couldn't even imagine that happening for a few years.
