I'm thinking of buying iether the BrailleMe or Orbrit reader 20. (self.Blind)
submitted by bradley22
I'd like your input.

I like the idea of the BrailleMe's 6 dots instead of the Orbit readers 8, but don't like the idea of the blinking cerser filling up the rest of the letter. for example; if I write l, 1 2 3, from my understanding, 4 5 and 6 will still show up and will be blinking away for some reason.

I've heard that the BrailleMe's dots can fade a lot easier than the orbit reader 20s.

I do like the idea of the BrailleMe's curser routing buttons though.

I honestly don't have mutch to say about the orbit reader 20 although I do like the navigation arrows, does the BrailleMe have arrows?

I haven’t tried the Braille Me, but I have the Orbit. It works great. Just note that there are a few different versions being sold. There is the original orbit Reader 20, Orbit Reader 20 Plus, Orbit Writer, and the Orbit Reader 40. Be sure to read the full name and description before you purchase the braille display. I have the Orbit Reader 20 Plus, and it has met my needs. When working with a display with only 20 cells, the router keys are less necessary. If you want to move the curser, you will simply need to press the left or right arrow keys or a certain key combination. I like to have dots 7 and 8 in order to not have to deal with the curser obscuring the other characters. The Orbit Reader 20 Plus has excellent braille quality with very firm dots. Orbit acknowledged their previous quality control issues in a previous interview or blog post (I cannot remember), and has supposedly fixed the issue. I purchased the Orbit Reader 20 Plus directly from Orbit Research. I don't know if any other distributers are selling the other versions of the Orbit braille displays. Also note that the Orbit can seem a bit loud at first and that the cells take slightly longer to change compared to higher end displays. Let me know if you have any other questions. I hope that this helps.

I've tried but don't have a BrairreMe.
It's just as loud as the orbit, but all cells change in a single loud "click" - in parallel rather than series if you like.
The Me has routing keys it's true, but not arrows - just some extra buttons. The Me has an odd menu navigation system too, and a DC charger rather than any sort of USB standard.

As said, the lack of routing keys is less bothersome on a small display, with NVDA you can map move by word commands if you need more than character navigation.

My company $1 and we have the 20 Plus and Writer in stock now.

Definitely recommend the 20 Plus over the older 20. It has built-in translation as well as a clock and other features for $100 more.

The 40 is nice but unfortunately delayed a bit due to Covid-19, latest ETA December.

TBH on the BrailleMe, we used to carry it but to my knowledge, there hasn't been a firmware update since the middle of 2019, nor a driver to work with the latest NVDA. I'd love for more low-cost braille displays to succeed, as it opens up a world of possibility for people who couldn't afford a braille display previously.

What exactly does built in translation mean?

Can you give me an example or two?

I don't need a clock, I have the Iphone for that.

Do you know for a fact if the dots are improved on the 20 plus? I asked RNIB and they said they're the same.

The dots are the same between the 20 and 20 Plus.
Translation means that if you were to load a print file into the unit directly, it will translate it to braille. If you are only going to use the Orbit with a screen reader and not load in files locally, then your screen reader would instead handle translation.

Then I’ll get the 20.

Oh and I phoned another company here in the UK and was told that the people that make BrailleMe are very unresponsive and when they sent back units to be fixed; they didn't fix them at all. So now they don't sel the BrailleMe but sadly the company is still on the BrailleMe website for the UK.

Thanks!

How do I edit without curser routing buttons?

What made you buy the plus over the 20?

Which software are you using? With Fusion/JAWS I can switch between computerbraille, 6dot braille and 6dot shortbraille (not sure what the correct expression is in english). This way you could have 6dot display plus the cursor on dots 7 and 8.

I don’t have a device yet but when I do, I’ll be using NVDA. I’m sure I can find a setting :)

Yeah, probably :).

I know you can switch between grade 1, a to z and numbers and grade 2, contractions.
