How can I get into linear algebra as a blind person? (self.Blind)
submitted by SadStarCat
For a while using a S A P I 5 voice has allowed me to get through text very quickly. My problem lies in the way mathematical symbols are frequently rendered in images, and therefore can't be copied, or the fact that copying them adds an unreadable square that can't be verbalized. If I find a symbol, I don't know how it sounds, so I can't type it into Google, and worse is it's not an alphanumeric symbol so I wouldn't be able to type it conventionally. How can I overcome these obstacles?

Learning braille might help.

I would look into LaTeX as a tool for transcribing your math, as well as reading. If you can get problems and equations formatted in it the issues with symbols become much less annoying since it's plain text anyway. I would talk to your school and such about this possibility.

Usually I just search for coding examples. For example I never remember how to rotate unit vectors using quaternions (which is required to build rotation matrices) so I always have to look that up, which may lead to answers full of mathematic symbols that VoiceOver has trouble reading, but code is usually plain ASCII text, which makes it accessible.

Learn and use braille. It’s the best way to do math.

Learn the foil method. Algebra is quite easy once you learn the order of operations. I used Nemeth and a Braille Perkins machine and an abacus to do most of the problem solving.

Use LaTeX
Most sighted people use it for higher level math and it's completely accessible

I would try ask in r/math I think you're more likely to get a useful response there as I assume you're not the first one to encounter this problem. The solutions involving LaTeX seem decent though, I believe there are tools that will convert latex images into text which could then be parsed somehow by a text reader?
