Looking into getting a cat (self.Blind)
submitted by SPN-hunter
Hello I am a blind person who is interested in getting a cat, but I have a few questions. How do you pick up the cat poop and clean the litter box? I want to know any tips and tricks you guys have when dealing with a cat.

Thanks in advance!!!

Self-cleaning litter boxes are a thing! I saw one for the first time at a blind person's home over 20 years ago. Now we have one for our kitty. It's Nature's Miracle brand. Works wonderfully. Clumping litter and solids get automatically scooped/pushed into a receptacle that you replace when it fills up.

My husband is blind. We have a metal name tag and a little bell on our kitty's collar. She knows to shake her head to make a jingling sound so daddy knows where she is. She's our second cat, and both figured this out on their own.

Aw that is so heartwarming (the kitties jingling)!

That only works until the cat itself goes blind. Then both blind human and blind cat get to snark at each other. It's kind of fun really.

LOL. Then I'll put a bell on my husband.

Get a litter container that has multiple sifting trays. Get clumping litter. This will allow you to just pick up the waste and toss it. Make sure you replace the litter on a schedule and clean the trays regularly to keep the kitty bathroom sanitary

I just use clumping litter, and wear a glove and pick it up and place it into a trash bag. Not hard.

If you get a Scoop for the litter box with slits in it that can be really helpful when using clumping litter.

We have a cat, and I need everyone here to understand that it is completely and totally impossible for a blind person to clean out a litter tray. Completely impossible. Just like I also can't do the dishes, hoover, or sweep up. Completely impossible, you understand that?

Don't give the game away!

why would a blind person be unable to do dishes?

You can get the multiple shifter trays. Self cleaning can scare cats and make it so that they won't go back to it. There's a few videos by Jackson Galaxy about it.

Taking the cats to the vet is very important as well. And you can get food brand recommendations as well.

Also, there are litter pan liners that sift the litter too. I’ve used them a few times...but my cat scratches at them like crazy.
