Hello All! I wanted to share a photo of my mom who is blind here: I was limited in my option to only post video. For the first time I felt limited. Instead I will share the story and describe the photo I was going to share.
My mom started a community organization in an underserved neighborhood in Chicago. She partnered with a larger nonprofit to organize a literacy program. The photo I wanted to share is a group photo. October 27th was the distribution day for the families who applied for the literacy program. Families walked away with a laptop, internet access, and a bag full of school supplies and learning aids.
The photo is of 5 Latina women all in face masks to prevent the spread of COVID19. The room they are in is located at North West Side Housing Center. The room is grey with lighting over head. In the background is a TV mounted to the wall and under the TV are 2 potted tropical plants. 3 of the women are behind a table. The table has different color bags filled with school supplies and classroom learning aids. One woman, my mother, who is blind, is sitting next to the table with her cane in her hand. One woman is standing next to my mom holding 2 large bags in her hands. Arms to her side.
My mom started this organization, which has inspired me to return to my community and volunteer. Please visit the website
