Looking for Accessible TVs and Devices for Someone with Poor Hearing/Vision (self.Blind)
submitted by The_Orm

Hey! It was recommended I crosspost here as I have a very specific issue. My grandfather only has one eye and only has partial sight in that eye. He's having a lot of difficult with TV subtitles at this point, and he cannot hear.

I'm having a difficult time finding a solution for my grandfather. He's been hard of hearing for years, and recently his eyesight is starting to go, making it very difficult for him to watch TV when smaller subtitles are on. To complicate things, he's very stubborn when it comes to learning new technology. That means things like using apps that generate subtitles on a separate tablet/phone won't work for him, even though it generally seems like the best bet.

He's recently learned how to navigate Netflix and YouTube, and is comfortable using his cable box. For the most part, he just watches news channels (MSNBC, Fox News, CNN). However, his building recently changed cable providers. Previously, the subtitles were large enough for him, but this new provider/box has very small subtitles and no way to change the sizing. These subtitles are too small for him to read, and from what I understand, his cable provider doesn't have any other options/boxes.

So far, it seems like my best options are:

* Set him up with an Apple TV and try and teach him to use that for CNN and any other stations that have apps on the platform. It seems as if Apple TV has more subtitle/accessibility options and the ability to select larger subtitles. The downside is he might not be able to learn this new system quickly.
* Connect an antenna for the major network channels so he can use the TVs built-in subtitle options. This means he forfeits the cable channels like MSNBC and CNN, though.

**TLDR:** Does anyone happen to know of any easy-to-use/integrate subtitle solutions for those with poor eyesight? Ideally, I'm looking for a TV that has a feature or app available that does something similar to YouTube's real-time subtitle generation on-screen, but as far as I know, that doesn't exist.

There’s accessible features on some t.v. As I can gather but the hearing issue may be harder to adjust for. You’d have to consider both. Which can be more tricky. Not sure if there are anyone who’s deaf blind on here.

Hello there,
I am totally blind. When I went looking for a new television I had to make sure that it was accessibility features that I could access myself. I settled on a Samsung 7000 series. These TVs are very accessible and they have good options for people with low vision. I have included a video which is where I heard about the TVs from. I hope this helps.

I also have an Apple TV. The remote control for that can be very frustrating to use.
