Banking application Survey for University (self.Blind)
submitted by Ashki99
Hi, for a university course in human computer interaction we were asked to take up a semester long project. We decided on developing a Banking Application (on android) for low visibility users, however we cannot even begin to understand how one uses any technological device with an impairment.

We're designing this app to bridge the gap between the common banking apps used and the banking apps available for visually impaired people.

Through this subreddit and a copious amount of research papers we’ve learnt a lot but still don’t understand enough. So we decided to conduct our own user research. I figured this subreddit would be the best platform for engagement.

$1

I would love for you to fill in this $1 and give any advice or critique on what we’ve done. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks a lot for your valuable time.

The best way for you to get familiar with app accessibility and how blind people use technology is to get a phone, either iPhone or Android, or a Windows computer even, install or turn on a screen reader and try to use it with the screen turned off.
Both Android and iPhone have a screen curtain option wherein the screen reader is still working but the screen is turned off. On iPhone it's a tripple 3-finger tap when VoiceOver is turned on, on Android I'm not sure off hand since I don't have one near me.
Turn this on and try to play around with the phone, looking at different apps, what feels comfortable to use, what doesn't, and you'll build a familiarity with the way blind people use technology..Some banks already have pretty accessible app interfaces, see for instance Monzo, a UK based bank, or Paypal. Good luck!

I have a current/checking account, savings account and credit card with 1 bank. Credit cards and a loan with another, a mortgage with a building society and an account with an app only bank providing virtual dabit cards.

I've never even imagined using a blind specific app - all the aps I use are mainstream and work just fine for me.
No sight at all. iPhone user. UK.

I think it's better for me to specify that our aim to create an app for users in our country, India, of lower income background. Since India is a developing country most users won't be able to afford an iPhone, therefore our focus is on providing an app on android supported phones.

a fair and relevant point. But ... why not improve the accessibility of existing aps?, Blind people dont have separate money to the rest of the population so why use a diferent app?

This app isn't just made for low visibility users, we're just trying to make it accessible for low visibility users. The important banking and payments apps in India don't do a very good job in accessibility, so we seek to improve that, hopefully. Also, I would like to note that this is a university course project. We're trying to design an accessible/universal interface, not fully build the app.
