Learning VoiceOver / TalkBack (self.Blind)
submitted by RongRong-Zhang
Dear readers,

I am researching how the learning experience of voiceover and talkback can be improved because this is often a slow and difficult process.

That is why I am looking for people who have gone through this process and would like to share their experiences with me in the form of a short interview.

If you are open to this, send me a message, or mail to: $1, you would help me and many others with it!

Sincerely,

Rong-rong

This is probably over right? I found I am pretty techy and like tinkering so learning was easy I just experimented and pressed buttons and tried to play with every control and practice practice practice. The only way I would have it.

Yeah, pretty much what we need is a tutorial for voiceover. It’s a little baffling that one doesn’t exist.

Oh, that's interesting! What type of tutorial would be handy? I know there is a build in tutorial, but what does it lack? Would making it more involved with the contxt better? Would it be a good idea to have more personal coaches available?
Edit: I have a lot of questions which I posted under the reply of the previous user. I'm very interested in how I can taillor the tutorial or provide a way to make the current tutorial better!

There is no built-in tutorial, and that’s the problem

Oh, that is worrying. Someone once told me they could directly follow a tutorial on their phone, but likely they meant through an app. It is important that there will be a build in tutorial then!

urrently I'm torn between letting the person learn on their own and ask for help in a forum/ to an AI, or learn together with someone. (For example: family, friend, experienced user who's refreshing their memory on certain apps...) I want the user to have autonomy over the learning process, not feel forced or stressed over time and speed, whilst having a readily available and understanding coach/ study buddy

A voiceover tutorial might be nice.

From my experience there are tutorials but they do seem like a hassle to follow. I don't exaclty know how to improve them. Do I involve theplanning, mood, experience with non-visual devices and experience with the phone? What factors do I need to involve to make it better? Would duolingo(courses like learning a language) be a good example of how a tutorial could work or should I approach it the NS reisplanner(the dutch website and app to plan a railway journey: you can change the start point and end point and stops in between, the start or end time and see how long it takes and which steps and alternatives you can follow) or the should I approach it a different way? Would it be a good idea to have more personal coaches available? Which contextual things do I need to take into account during the learning process? I know that people become more stressed when they have a lot of things going on in the background, which might be related to the amount of things a person has planned to learn and how recently the person started using the phone non-visually.

I don't think you can improve them at all, leave it up to apple or google.

Thank you for your response! I'm not trying to change the gestures, but to make the learning process (onboarding) easier for middle aged users (50+) who are just starting to learn voiceover. It is my bachelor end project on the Eindhoven University of technology.
In any case I've found that there is a lack of coaches. It is also easier to have someone who can coach you through the setup and how to get started. This is, of course, hard due to corona. I hope the problem I'm trying to solve is a bit nore clear right now, I tried to be consise in my question but I might have been a bit too consise.

I think there's already a voiceover tutorial you can download http://www.looktel.com/vo-tutorial

It might not exist anymore though.

Thing is; having a tutorial like the mac does would probably be useful.

Taking them through flicking, double taping, typing, scrolling, and using the rotor.
