Audio descriptions for Sjar Wars: Rebels.(self.Blind)
submitted by [deleted]
Hey everyone, I’m in Canada and looking for somewhere that might have audio descriptions for the Star Wars: Rebels cartoon. I asked for the same help a while ago with The Clone Wars, but the resource I used to find that one doesn’t have Rebels unfortunately. It’s not that I have an issue with buying it legitimately, but none of the officially released versions that I’ve found provide audio descriptions. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance!

There is a website for the audio description narrators. The people that actually do the audio narration for programs. They have a website where you can request certain shows or movies be audio described. I cannot vouch to their turnaround times, but it is a start. I put the link down below. You can add movies or shows that you want to see audio described to their wish list. https://theadna.org/

I just looked at the site and it really confused me. Once they create the descriptions, how/where do you get them? I visited the wish list and coming soon page but the main purpose of the rest of that link seemed to be identifying who is narrating different shows and providing that credit. Do they approach the services with this content and connect to try and get audio description on it? Considering they are all narrators who do it for a living, I don’t understand how they would legally provide audio descriptions for various content like this otherwise. I also can’t see them doing it illegally because, as I mentioned, they all do this as a profession. Any clarification would be really appreciated.

To my knowledge the movie studios that want to add audio description contacts to their TV shows and films reach out to companies that hire audio describers. They do not post any audio description tracks on their website. I believe that if they do get jobs to do audio descriptions for a movie or TV show that they might present the wish list items to the studio as well. Again as I said in my previous post I cannot attest to any turnaround times or any request submitted there. You may also look on the acb.org website about audio description which I have linked below. I do not work for either of these. I am just a blind guy was passing on the information. https://www.acb.org/adp/?back=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2Fsearch%3Fclient%3Dsafari%26as_qdr%3Dall%26as_occt%3Dany%26safe%3Dactive%26as_q%3Daudio+description+ACB%26channel%3Daplab%26source%3Da-app1%26hl%3Den

Thanks for clearing that up. I had also talk to Roy from the website after posting here and he mentioned that some services added description after it was put on their wish list. Either way, I put in a request for Star Wars: Rebels and it’s been added so fingers crossed it will come to Disney+ eventually.

Thanks for this. I’m going to check it out at the very least.

No and we've checked everywhere! Audio vault, sero, spectrum access and disney+. It sucks bc the mandalorian is diving into rebels territory and we can't watch it without being very confused!
[deleted] [OP]1 points2y ago
Exactly the reason I’m looking for it. Any idea if Disney+ has an accessability e-Mail we could organize a mass request campaign to? When I e-mailed the one I found, it told me that the address was no longer in service.
TwoSunsRise1 points2y ago
I couldn't find any email addresses. Here's the Disney+ accessibility web page. It has options for 24/7 support through chat and phone number. I think I'll try chatting them about it.
I've asked on the discord server for that resource but I'm pretty sure that other people have asked before and audio description for that series sadly doesn't exist.
[deleted] [OP]1 points2y ago
That really sucks. Too bad we couldn’t mobilize and all request it from Disney+. If it went up there, someone would be able to rip the audio for those who don’t have it too.

OP, can I ask when you use audio descriptions from the "resource", how do you use it? Do you just listen to the audio only? Do you play the video on your TV and play the audio from your phone? Something else?
[deleted] [OP]2 points2y ago
Yeah, I just upload the MP3s to dropbox after I’ve downloaded them and then stream it from my phone. It’s actually kind of nice because I can listen, lock my phone and do other things too.

I’ve not heard of Disney describing Rebels anywhere as of yet. It seems odd considering it is on Disney Plus.

It’s really disappointing since the cartoons are starting to be referenced in The Mandalorian. With The Clone Wars, it’s only season seven that has audio descriptions on Disney+. I realize they can’t go back and do everything or need time to record audio descriptions, but it doesn’t make sense to me: Why would you have one season out of seven with audio descriptions if you aren’t going to provide it for the other six? I’m just glad people were able to record the audio descriptions that Sky provided when the series originally aired in the UK. I was hoping that any network (whether it was Sky or not) had provided the same for Rebels too.
Edit: The other thing that’s weird about Disney+ is that they also have audio descriptions for The Clone Wars special/movie that kicked off the entire series. It’s the six seasons in between that don’t have anything.

See the stupid thing here is, at least with Clone Warss anyway, there exists audio description for it. It was described on Netflix. Now it's on Disney plus, a service which is even describing old disney movies like the Black Cauldren, and it's nowhere to be found. It's just like the Newest Bladerunner. When I watched it on Itunes, described. Now it's on Netflix and the description is abscent. I guess it's a licensing thing? But nobody benifits from this.

I just wanted to reply to this because I found something out the other day. Apparently, Disney had to get permission to stream The original run of the series because it was produced with Warner Brothers. I’m wondering if the audio description was a contract with WB and that’s the reason why there’s only audio description for the last season, which was completely produced by Lucasfilm within Disney. It’s still sucks, but at least there would be some logic to that reasoning.
Remy_C1 points2y ago
Yes, that would make a lot of sense. It's rather foustrating that even audio description is subject to Licensing restrictions though.

I totally agree and it’s one of the things that frustrates me to no end when it comes to you audio descriptions. I wish that someone involved with the studio were in the industry itself could just come out and explain to people who are blind why stuff like this happens. I think not getting an explanation at all makes it more annoying than anything else.

I'm not sure whether they have the for that particular series, but Audio Vault has them for all of the movies and for Clone Wars.
[deleted] [OP]1 points2y ago
Yeah, they’re actually the resource I was alluding to. Unfortunately, they don’t have it. I e-mailed them to request the series but haven’t heard anything back yet. I just want to catch up on the cartoons since it seems like some of those characters will be crossing over into The Mandalorian this season.
