I have EnvisionGlasses and OrCam MyEye 2 - AMA (self.Blind)
submitted by macadamia_owl
I paid for both of them from my own cash, no extra price reduction given or payment.

Got OrCam MyEye 2 used unit in great condition from a person who sold it because original user died and he had no idea what to do with it and wanted to sell to someone who will use it. I use it 5 months.

Advantages: you can wear it on any side of your existing glasses your choice, form factor, for now more reliable text recognition, more polished, more comfortable, doesn't heat up, has auto flash if light is too low

Disadvantages: battery life - yes you can load it with any powerbank on the go but even on standby or turned off it loses battery life, no updates no new functions only once a year it can be better for such prices, only 3 languages you can't change if you want different ones than preinstalled for your region you have to buy whole new device again from other country there's no free choice of languages!, no protection from rain drizzle or moisture, it works well with simple fonts but when it's a bit skewed or decorative or atypical it doesn't recognize text at all which is often now in stores same even for simple font but behind a bit reflective plexiglass

Few months later I learned about EnvisionGlasses preorders (super early bird and early bird offers were gone already) i still got regular preorder offer with Smith Optics Frames only those are having possibility to install any kind of lenses and are much more stable. In the box there were thin wires Titanium Standard Frames as well. It has great potential to grow but for now it's in my opinion in kindergarten.

Advantages: light drizzle resistance, it's actually Google Glass Enterprise 2 hardware so porting your favourite apps and services from Android should be possible devs from Envision are open to cooperation, video calling for help assistance and other person sees what you see live (like BeMyEyes or free Aira but for your trusted persons), handwriting and atypical decorative font recognition, live subtitles reading, longer battery life than OrCam, frequent updates and faster fixes, apps and services platform, you can import scanned text to app

Disadvantages: no camera flash if it's too dark it won't detect anything or you have to turn on light source, there's no point to read gesture or any point gesture it read everything it sees in 180 grade field of camera vision, no rewind/forward gestures, it warms up after a while of use, unit is build into frame so you can't adjust it to your head shape, you can't adjust speech rate/volume durning output if you go back to device settings (you have to) device forgots all the text and you have to start all over again, 80% of features works only trough WIFI, it's a whole body device camera is fixed to the right side little display prism sticking out in front of your right eye (you can't change it's position to left side or dismount) you can turn it off control touchpad is on right side as well there's no voice commands (hopefully they add them for hands free use when walking with cane)

Any questions AMA

Hi - Just wondering if you have any updated thoughts on these -am thinking of trying my 70 year old father on one or the other.

I, to, was wondering about any updated thoughts with more use? I’d only heard of OrCam and am looking into it.

There are very frequent updates every month they are improving some stuff and fixing problems with invasion glasses I can't say anything more to the or come because my own it don't get any more updates I would have to pay a lot to get more of them after 1-year of guarantee and that the Invasion glasses got some significant updates like useful just rooms for forward and backwards navigation in text volume control ol ol13 still no third party apps like be my eyes and others that were promised on the launch and pre-order campaign they are still telling they will come later on on the same thing is with the boys control Öl sorry for the typing errors because I I recently got for the blind and I have very hard time I'm voice typing and screen typing as well I'm trying my best and English is not my native language still after one year with and vision glasses they have much better battery life than or come my eye from what I know the newest version of or come my Pro 2 has the same battery life they didn't improved it it has only li2 or three new features like voice control finding doors and a few other objects in room and finding navigating in text by voice commands with in vision glasses 1000 have or come has it better but in vision glasses if still big potential for improvement and flexibility of of update I hope that you will use that

Hi Thanks for your review! May i ask how about experience wise? Which one is more intuitive? Which one did you end up familiarizing more? Using more? Which one is more practical for your everyday usage? Which would fit better for someone completely blind?

Im not fully blind (one eye fully blind other eye hand movement) but I think for now OrCam MyEye 2 PRO would be better choice if that person can't wait and want problem free device now. EnvisionGlasses has some unique features and more flexible AI (but still in early development and its buggy) that Orcam won't have but it lacking now some basic things like money recognition, working without internet reliably and useful more intuitive sound cues and gestures.

For me for now more intuitive is OrCam but this may change in next years if EnvisionGlasses improve and add missing features. OrCam all functions are working without internet and in poor light (due to flash light if needed) but compared to EnvisionGlasses it missing video calling (needs wifi), scene description (needs wifi), handwriting and decorative fancy text (needs wifi) I find OrCam recognised text for now more reliable even when EnvisionGlasses is connected to wifi.

Orcam: Lower weight (its half the weight) and mounting mechanism (I can switch sides if my ear is soreor if im walking with cane) of OrCam - with EnvisionGlasses you're forced to use it on right side (bit trobulesome if youre using cane with right hand) and its 2x heavier due to battery after a while you feel the weight. If the glasses frame gets broken with Orcam you just mount them to different ones, on EnvGlasses whole device is broken.

Both of those are having training videos on Youtube showing all the features and how to use them but OrCam has those more in depth and in multiple languages.

What I like in OrCam as when I held book or letter in front of me it says to me I should hold it more to the left, right, up, down or text is cut out from the side and which one that light is too low and I should try in better light enviorement or try auto flashlight. Tells me if I'm holding document upside down. EnvisionGlasses dosent have that at all for now they implemented only sound cue of how many words camera sees which is not exclusive to document you're holding but everything it sees it like echolocation like Microsoft Soundscape if any error occurs its silent no cues whats wrong. This way is unreliable and unintuitive in louder enviorement like outside or shopping.

I would recommend requesting trying a demonstration device first. It's available for both devices. .

How do I request a demo device?

How much use do you realistically find out of them when out and about walking?

Sorry for so late reply I couldn't test it outside due to health reasons properly.

Envision Glasses:
Today with internet connection use WIFI (full functionality) it eats 20% per 50 mins of battery life but I got an update. Around 4 or bit more hours of use on average. Prism glass screen is very bright no way to lower it's brightness for now but it's possible to turn it off completely maybe this will prolong battery life but more although according to my better sighted friends not much is shown on screen and it shouldn't impact battery life much. WIFI is the biggest battery eater but without it many functions aren't working. Haven't tested it with paired bluetooth headphones but it will shorten battery life but more for sure. Have seen on ebay USB-C wired one ear headphone for Google Glasses maybe they will work same hardware so why not.

OrCam MyEye 2
It's around 2,5-3,5 hours depending on how much you're using camera flash to lighten up the surrounding if it's too dim. There's option to turn off auto-flash.

I don't have a question and they're not for me but I hope you get good use out of them.
