Person with dyslexia seeking tips and tricks to helpful resources I may not know about (self.Blind)
submitted by dysreadingcircuit
Hi, I am dyslexic which means I have troubles reading and writing. When I read it's laboriously manual I get headaches and want to sleep. When I write I often make spelling or grammar mistakes. I use some assistive technologies like text to speech, voice to text, audiobooks, and spelling/grammar software to help me. Dyslexics and people who are blind share a common hurdle which is accessing the printed word. My question is what resources do you use that you think I might benefit from too?

For instance this could mean: assistive technologies, accessibility software, audiobook applications, etc. Also any other mental tips and tricks you have developed as a person with a barrier to the printed word is helpful too. Thanks!

Voice Dream Reader is a text-to-speech app that includes highlighting, but it also includes a font that is supposed to be really good for dyslexics.

You may also like Beeline Reader (I may have misspelled that) which was created for people with low vision. It uses subtle color changes to keep you from re-reading or skipping text.

Many libraries for the blind are also open to people with dyslexia, and you may particularly like Bookshare which has hundreds of thousands of e-books that you can import into your favorite TTS apps or change the font of to suit your reading preferences.

These are resources I currently use:

I use Overdrive/Libby with my library card to get access to free audiobooks.

I've used some text to speech and voice to text apps haven't found a good free one.

I use Google Translate and my phone's camera to scan and upload text from the physical world into the digital world.

I know a type of glasses exist that can read text out loud called the OrCam MyEye but it's too expensive for how little it would benefit me.
