Looking for ideas for a visually impaired person that is unable to speak to communicate (self.Blind)
submitted by sttiicks
Hello everyone! My dad has cancerous tumours in his face that spread to his only good eye and caused him to lose his sight. Along with this due to operations on his face his jaw is misaligned and he is unable to speak clearly at all so voice to text is not an option for him.
He’s able to answer phone calls but due to his difficulties with speaking its almost impossible for people to understand him over the phone. I know this is such a stretch I can’t think of anything that he could help him to communicate with people who aren’t with him in person with ease.

If by chance someone has any idea of a potential option for him I would really appreciate to hear about it we are very desperate!!

If he still has his usable hearing he may be able to learn a screen reader and type out text messages/emails. For phone conversation he could use TTY that some deaf people use for telephone communication

To me a iPhone/iPad is easiest to learn

iOS has a built in TTY into the Phone app.

Go into settings> accessibility > RTT/TTY > then switch on RTT/TTY

If he is in the United States, there is an FCC funded service called speech to speech relay. It is a relay service in which people who are trained in understanding different speech variation patterns can repeat what he is saying to the person he calls so they understand the message clearly.
There is also a service called hearing carryover, which is done through the relay service, As well. He would be able to hear how the relay operator read the messages he typed, and he would hear the response from the person he called.

We’re actually in Australia but I will definitely still look into this and see if we have this sort of service available here. Thanks so much!!

If you have an iphone look in to learning voice over. And if you have an android look in to talkback.
