Is Discord accessible to screen readers and suitable for audio description? (self.Blind)
submitted by KirrinKae
I am hoping to get some advice around which platforms are most accessible for audio description.

I am running a community memorial/vigil event this month. As my country is currently in lock down due to covid, the vigil will be hosted on Zoom as a webinar, and I need a separate virtual space people can opt into to listen to the audio description.

If I was to set up a discord server with only an audio channel would this be accessible to those using screen readers, or would it be hard to navigate?

If discord would not work the other options I can think of are:

I can set up a zoom meeting for AD that is separate to the main space - but I know this makes it difficult to change/balance the sound levels between the two windows, unless the person has them on two different devices.

I am looking into conference call services but am limited by costs.

Suggestions of other free or low cost platforms is welcomed.

Thanks for your help and advice on this, going fully digital is challenging but fun.

Greetings,

If I were in your situation, I’d spin up a “Jitsi” page and pretty much have all you desire in a matter of seconds rather than possibly spending hours trying to spin up and configure a server.

I highly recommend you give, “Jitsi” a shot...

Jitsi, is an open-source, cross-platformaudio/video conference platform which also provides free numbers and conference pins for folks who’d rather use a LAN line than a smart device.

Here’s what you do...

Open your browser of choice and type:

“meet,jit.si/whateveryou like”

The “whateveryoulike” portion of the URL is of course, self-explanatory. BTW, you can also include spaces.

This will create a website with the title you named it, a link to the Jitsi app if you don’t already have it installed - [Android/IOS] along with LAN line numbers for about two-dozen countries.

When you open Jitsi, deny access to video and allow access to the mic.

Pretty much, that’s it. Quick, easy, free and accessible. Not sure, but I believe it can manage up to a 1,000 participants, but I’ve never reached that and you might want to confirm if that’s still in effect.

There’s a section in the app that will allow you to forward the URL to invitees.

Hope that helps. Any questions; let me know.

Peace.

Discord is accessible yeah. Not the prettiest interface but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. It works. Although, can't speak for windows. But on mac and ios, anything apple basically it works.

Thanks, thats good to know :D

Aesthetics isnt too important except from an accessibility aspect of will those with low vision be able to see the font

Discord makes a half-assed attempt at accessibility at best. Also, if you want more than 50 people in an audio channel, you have to pay. Discord doesn't care about us. On top of that, using separate services means you would have to manage two streams, possibly with different latencies and bitrates. I would see if it can be done in Zoom first.

not true, discord has been making leaps and bounds in the past year. It's actually pretty great now. It's replaced skyped completely for me. A sighted friend and I have been watching star trek TOS via discord streaming for about a week now, with her describing. It's been a blast and I'm glad discord lets you share your screen including audio. Also you don't need to pay.

Thats useful to know, I didn't know they charged!

Thanks for the advice with zoom, its what ive been using up until now but wanted to look elsewhere as had feedback about issues with volume control, but i can always go back and say we looked but zoom is still the best option despite the issues.

Most people use zoom for that type of stuff these days. Also if you want to stream this event zoom allows for this if you pay
