I am interested in developing a video game with sound design for blind people. (self.Blind)
submitted by [deleted]
This is a part of a future development project, where the sound will be designed in such a way that the environment will be readable through sound. I am not blind or visually impaired, so I don't know what the experience feels like, but according to the little I know, blind people are far more sensitive to sound.

If you were to think of a shooter game, which is my goal, imagine that you would be able to tell what kind of environment you are in, if the walls are good for cover, or if they are only concealment, meaning that you can hide, but the bullets would still penetrate and damage your character. Binaural three dimensional audio and occlusion of sound also play an important role here. This can help with identifying if you just escaped a sniper round passing by your ears and in which direction to seek cover. Ideally, the player should be able to tell if the footsteps in the room above are coming from a light weight enemy with a rifle, or someone carrying a heavy machine gun. That is imperative to make a tactical decision on whether one should engage or not. The player should also be able to tell if his teammates nearby are carrying a rocket launcher, an assault rifle or a shotgun. All these weapons make different sounds when handled.

What design aspects should I keep in mind to make a video game that simulates real life from an audio stand point?

This sounds super ambitious and I hope to play it some day.

Check out some audio games as comments have already advised. I'd also recommend checking out this game in beta right now for Xbox. I have heard a demo of it and it sounds absolutely superb and close to what you're going for. https://www.fallingsquirrel.com/the-vale

Thank you so very much, looks like a weekend of some proper listening.

Also, this is more of a mainstream title, but The Last of Us Ii is getting big praise in the blind community because of its accessibility. I haven't played it but would recommend taking a look to get an idea of what's out there. Good luck!

Thank you again. I have a Mac laptop, so I cannot play The Vale, but I did take a walk and listened to the gameplay on YouTube. It is quite well made. That scene in the beginning on the horse carriage is brutal! The wolves are cool as well, I think I counted four. This really reminded me of radio stories, where they have sound effects.

Have you tried to reach out to any other blindness organizations? You might want to take a look at the forums on the Apple advice website. And post your ID is there. There’s a lot of active users on the forums there and they can provide you with a lot of feedback. I put the link down below.

Also consider the forums on audio gaming. You can find the forms at the following link.

Good luck

I am totally blind. Your idea sounds very good.
I have tried a few audio games on my iPhone. Try looking at a game called audio wizards in the iOS App Store, and circus masters revenge also in the iOS App Store. Both have good audio design.
Looking forward to hearing more about your project.
Good luck

I tried to get the circus master's revenge, but somehow screwed up my AppStore password, fortunately though, there is gameplay on YouTube, so I can listen to it.

Thank you again. Will have to play these and listen.

You should try playing some existing audio games. This question will get much more traction on audiogames.net.

I would highly suggest joining this audio game development discord server.

Also, signing up for "forum.audiogames.net" would be a good idea too.

I think you're probably fine. Usually best to lend an arm and you can kind of bump the person with your elbow or say something like "I've got my arm out at your 11 o'clock." I think the main thing is for the blind person to have to make an affirmative move, you can bump or something so they know where your arm is but grabbing is weird because what do you do then if you don't want to be led. You should really start top level posts for this kind of thing, though.
