My cousin is getting Iris implants, and I'm so excited for her! (self.Blind)
submitted by UnladylikeMe
So my cousin, though I'm not sure the term, or a whole lot about it, has no irises, and is considered legally blind. In two weeks she is getting her second Iris implanted, and I'm so excited for her. Especially considering I have both Micropthalmia and Coboma in my left eye, and terrible vision in my right, and I love hearing her talk about how doffrent everything looks, and how happy she sounds. I also wonder If it'd be possible to give me eyesight in my left eye. I'm so excited for her, and hope everything goes well, and they can proceede with the procedure even with covid.

I have the same condition as your cousin. It’s called Aniridia and is fairly rare. There’s two forms, one is more severe, called spontaneous, and happens at random, but the other (the one I have) is inherited from a parent who also has Aniridia in either form. I’m looking into getting the same implants later myself, in hopes I’ll be more independent that way. I’m really happy to hear she is getting them and I hope she does well!

Fellow aniridiac here, how come I haven't heard about these implants before? They don't seem very prominent here in the EU.

They’re very, very new. Only got approved in the US 2 years ago, I’m not even sure if they are approved in the EU yet.

I am late to the party, but I am bringing the good news!

They do exist in Europe! Ask your eye doctor to find contacts for you or reach to your local Aniridia group in your country to see if they have contacts to hospitals with surgeons who perform these, finding a hospital or a doctor who performs these are just as rare as Aniridia is, but they do exist! My mother had iris transplant performed by a Estonian eye surgeon in Finland 12 years ago.

It's great to hear that your cousin is potentially getting their vision back. This is a feel good story that gives me and probably many other people hope. I hope everything goes well!

Wow so awesome! How much has her vision improved? Where is she getting it done? I’m interested in getting one

I'm not sure the details, but I know she's getting it done in Kansas city! She has mentioned being able to see colors and light a lot better than she did, before she could only see light really or something, I'm not entirely sure. But I know she's really happy about it.
