Is a t-shirt that reads “you’re in my blind spot” insensitive as a gift? (self.Blind)
submitted by LeeLooPoopy
I have a family member who went blind maybe 12 months ago. Obviously it’s been a huge adjustment and has been devastating to them. We generally have pretty good banter, and I wanted to get him a T-shirt for Christmas that says “you’re in my blind spot” as sort of a lighthearted joke. But other family members think it’s insensitive. I wouldn’t want to upset them... thoughts?

EDIT: thank you everyone. I think I’ll just do it and hope for the best. Ask for forgiveness not permission right?

I don't think any of us here can tell you how your family member would react to such a gift. Myself, and a lot of other people here would find a lot of humor in it, and love it. Others, maybe not.

You're going to know a lot better than anyone here what your person will or won't find funny or insensitive.

Now, tell us where to find that shirt.

I think it depends where he is in his acceptance Journey of his disability. If he has mostly excepted it and has a good sense of humor then he might enjoy it but if he still struggling with it then he might not. I personally would find it hilarious but then that’s just me

I'm sure someone out there would be offended ′or offended on our behalf, too′ Me? I'd wear that like a boss!

I’d buy and wear it for myself, but I don’t think I would appreciate it as a Christmas gift, especially so soon after losing my sight. Perhaps a gift that recognizes his sight loss doesn’t define him.

This is 100% dependant on the recipient and their sense of humor.

My husband is a wheelchair user, he has a shirt that read "I'm only in it for the parking" with a disabled parking logo. One that says "They see me rollin', they hatin'" and one that has an image showing the figure in the parking logo face down on the floor with the wheelchair behind it, it simply says "crap."

I have quite severe adhd and have some shirts that mock it.

However, in both cases, our humor tends to be on the darker and more self deprecating side.

If in doubt...ask them. They might thoroughly appreciate that someone is finally not pussy-footing around the whole thing. Or it might not be their kind of thing. Yes, it would spoil the surprise, but you'll get best results that way.

I’d probably be really amused and probably use it to give you a hard time. Hhahaha! Like everytime I saw you I’d say hey your blind spot here. Hahaha!
LeeLooPoopy [OP] 1 points 2y ago
I did give it to them and they thought it was very funny!
siriuslylupin6 1 points 2y ago
Oh nice that’s good.

No, but it would be funnier if it had Braille on it.

Once went to a blind convention and there was a womans shirt (I'm a male so sadly could not purchase it) which said in Braille

"If you can read this you are too close!"

It really depends on the individual I guess. Most people here seem to be fine with it. I’d probably be internally devastated and just fake laugh but cry about it when I’m trying to fall asleep.

Thank you, I really appreciate your response. That would obviously never be my intention!

It depends on the person. Personally, I’m googling it right now so I can buy one

It depends on the person, some people are far too sensitive, example I can c the joke but people always going to get offended about things
bjayernaeiy 1 points 2y ago
I'd wear the hell out of that
