My 79 year old mother in law is blind - I'm looking for special gift ideas (self.Blind)
submitted by GingerExpress88
This woman is incredible, and I want to find a gift that shows my adoration for her. There are a few hobby things we've already gotten gift cards for, but I want to take it one step further this Christmas.
I'd like to find an artist that would 3D print a family portrait to gift her, but I'm not having much luck with keywords to find the right artist/website. I'd also be interested in some really neat textured art work, that isn't extremely expensive.

As a sighted person, it's easy for me to overlook what could be fun, modern gadgets, or other thoughtful but helpful things that would make a really nice gift for my mother in law. She has several talking gadgets, like watches, clocks, a Google home thing; a few puzzle games like a textured Rubix cube, actual jigsaw puzzles. She's well stocked for her knitting hobby as well. I suppose I could just ask her out right what she wants, and she'd tell me, but I'd like to go for a surprise item if I can.

What are some unique gift ideas that would add fun and/or a new level of simplicity to your life? Many thanks for your valuable input!

As a knitter and crocheter, it never hurts to pick up some extra supplies. I like the website, KnitPicks. You could get her a giftcard to that store. Knit Picks also sells some neat project kits. Do you know if she has ever used an Apple device? You could get her an iPod Touch or a refurbished ipad.

Does she have a “Pen Friend” ? https://www.rnib.org.uk/rnibconnect/technology/penfriend-3-audio-labeller Very useful for all kinds of stuff. For example she could label her yarns so she would know the color. All the spices in the kitchen. Medicine bottles. Etc. she could even record pattern direction or recipes. Label file folders and receipts. It goes on.

I use uncommongoods.com for people that are hard to shop for. They have the bonus of really encouraging people to connect to the artist/creators of each item on the site so in times past if I like an item but want it slightly different I’ve been able to track down their main website and place a request there.

Does she read braille? These are good ideas, i think you're on the right track. "Tactile graphics" is usually the word to describe the textured pictures you're describing if that helps your search

She does read braille. My next step would be to find out what she likes to read; she does a lot more knitting than reading. Thank you for the keyword suggestion, and for your assistance, I'll give it a try!

good luck! ultimately you know her best and will be the best judge of gift. Another idea might be an Alexa, for audiobooks (while she's knitting) or for easy music. I played the alexa music trivia with my blind friends a while ago and it was very accessible and you can kind of choose the era, so it worked well even with the variety of ages we had. Might be fun to play at the holidays if you're able to visit in person this year!
