Is the context of this blind offensive? (self.Blind)
submitted by CommentsAreCancer
Let me get this out of the way first; I have no intention of using any replies from this thread as the basis for an argument and I ask out of my own curiosity. I work in engineering on a software product and we had an issue arrive in our workload. One of our users told a product manager our use of the word blind was offensive. I understand how the word could be used in a context would hurt someone's feelings, and I see why nobody wanted to argue whether our use fit that bill. The context here stems from the academic use of the term blind study. An obfuscated portion of the content is called a blind field, which determines whether a given user will or will not see it.

I should clarify I realize a few anecdotes do not speak for an entire group. I am interested if this is understandably offensive to a proportion of blind people, not necessarily whether it's offensive to you as a blind person. I ask because I had a Navajo friend who once tell me, "I don't give a shit if a white person has an Az Native bumper sticker when real racism is everywhere. It doesn't make you a better person to pick my battles and get offended on my behalf. So stop and ask before you assume." The person who pointed this out definitely wasn't blind and the least I can do is formulate an opinion based on those of people who understand what it means to be blind.

So I pose the question to you. Is the word blind in this context offensive?

No. It’s about as foolish as the person who took offence to two young women using sign language to converse at a funeral because they didn’t want to make any noise. Neither of them were deaf. It’s just idiocy at the greatest level.

Let me guess; that user isn't actually blind. We deal with lots of people like that. I'm not bothered by it, and you'll find a whole lot of people here who feel the same way.

Basically, take what your friend said, and replace bits about being native with bits about being blind.

I find the user's patronizing attitude offensive. The user of the word is perfect. It sounds like they might not be familiar with the field - enough to misinterpret it.

This just sounds like the person in question is the type to say everything that may indirectly be related to a minority group be offensive, you know, to get perceived good guy points, when in reality they're assholes for guilt tripping people such as yourself.
Doesn't offend me at all. I have bigger things to worry about than that shit, you know what I mean? nd its not even offensive to begin with. its just that what you're doing, doesn't affect me in any way whatsoever, so what's the point of getting outraged, or feeling any strong emotion for that matter?
I'd just stop taking this person seriously after this.

Totally normal use of the term, person making the complaint is crazy. Yeah, we get this a lot. Lots of people make a hobby out of getting wound up on someone else's behalf.

As a blind person, using this word or not will have zero impact on my life, or the lives of any other blind people. So go ahead and use the language as makes sense to you and your consumers. You can tell this person that if they really care about blind people, they can make a donation to, or just help raise awareness of, blind children's access to braille and literacy. That will do infinitely more good than shaming others use of the language.

Some people like to be entertaining like that. Some people like to make a big ado about nothing. It doesn’t offend me and it shouldn’t offend anyone else. Yeah, we better get working and change up all the blind words there are many of them. Oh wait.... that’s really moronic.

Blind as a bat.

Blindsided

Blind carbon copy

Blind date

Blind study

Double blind study

Etc... the list goes on.

Do you think the term "blind carbon copy" is offensive? Honestly, those kind of things don't bother me, it's the people who think they're offensive who do.
Kumandan1299 1 points 2y ago
No, I don't think it is offensive in this context at all.
