How do you get access to digital libraries? (self.Blind)
submitted by bibliotekario
Hi everyone, I'm an information science student. I have a question for you and that is how do you get access to libraries or books? I'm very interested to know how you retrieve or find information in digital libraries. What could a website developer do to improve your experience?

Check out BARD, bookshare, learning ally, and Library of Congress.

What are you creating or making? Is it academic? Is it for the general public? Will it be desktop or mobile? Android or Apple? What do you plan on doing with this information?

As a student, my college gave me free subscriptions to various academic journals and websites.

Hi, I'll start my thesis in a year from now. I'm interested in computer accessibility and the ways people find and retrieve information online. Yes, I have access to various academics journals as you metioned but I want to get more experience-related feedback on this topic.

Awesome! Some of my favorite youtubers are blind. They have some helpful videos on how they use technology.

They are Tommy Edison (https://www.youtube.com/c/TommyEdisonXP) and Molly Burke (https://www.youtube.com/user/MollyBurkeOfficial). Tommy was born blind and Molly has a degenerative eye disease that caused her to lose sight as a teen.

Here's a video collaboration Tommy did with UtahJS, an educational nonprofit aimed at promoting Javascript, about accessible technology. https://youtu.be/Y6MnWGpNPYA

Molly has done several videos on how she uses technology.

Hopefully, these resources can help get you started. Best of luck!

I use ebooks kindle app and apple books. They are accessible I use my screen reader on the iphone to read and find them read and buy them. All very accessible. There are braille libraries too and you can use them with a screen reader and in the case of library of congress or national library service you can call them.

A lot of great books are being self published exclusively via Kindle Unlimited. I use $1 to auto check while surfing Amazon if an ebook is available for free via two libraries I have cards for.
