Please be aware before paying for a subscription, I am disgusted (self.Blind)
submitted by autistictechgirl1990
The other day I decided to get Amazon Prime and download the streaming app on my phone. People always going on about how much better than Netflix it is. But everything I looked for or went on that was on the homepage had no audio description, but everything is in subtitles. I’ve turned on the audio description in accessibility on my iPhone so if it is on it will come on automatically, but as usual they are happy to make everything with subtitles but not audio description. They happy to take your money but can’t be bothered to make the shows or movies accessible. I’ve unsubscribed now but I am disgusted that in 2020 they haven’t sorted this issue out if they made it accessible I wouldn’t mind paying for the subscription but they are not getting my money for that service when they can’t even be bothered to make it accessible for everybody

I just checked a few and they all had audio description. The setting was a language option under "audio" in the subtitle menu. It may need to be manually enabled.

Not saying everything has description; just that I can at least confirm that not everything does not!

This is funny because Amazon Prime is the streaming service with the largest audio description catalogue in the U.S.? Did you bother to check the American Council of the Blind's listing of Amazon Prime content with audio description (www.acb.org/adp/amazonad.html)?

I’m in the UK

Did you try to play an Amazon original? Many of the original shows listed on the page I linked have description in the UK.

No I didn’t go onto an Amazon original, I tried the X-Files as I’ve not been able to find it with audio description anywhere, then I tried Futurama and then I tried a film but I can’t remember what film it was

Try something that has audio description next time; you'll be more successful.

I'm in Canada and I watch Amazon Prime. Not all shows have AD, but a lot do. The settings on your phone for AD only apply to itunes and Apple TV. With Amazon Prime, you have to start playing an episode and then choose "audio and subtitles". If the show has audio description available, you will find it there. Good luck!

I'm quite aware of what content is out there and available on Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime. The Audio Description Project has a very in-depth and comprehensive list of media on all the services that have AD. All Netflix and Amazon original shows have AD, and everything else may or may not have it. Older shows like the X-Files take time to get audio description, and they are releasing description at a fairly steady pace.

So you have a method to go into a subscription service informed about what content they carry now, but absolutely nothing has everything audio described yet, so that's an incorrect assumption to take when going into any of the services. It takes time, legislation has come about that will start making HBO and other cable networks provide AD content for new and older shows, but in the meantime, just have to be patient.

Amazon prime has other benefits like amazon go or free shipping, or the music and other stuff.

Amazon Prime is worth it for the free shipping, and the streaming music.
