Flying with a hobby aircraft (self.Blind)
submitted by kgabionair
Hello there, being blind or visually impaired, have you ever got the chance to fly with a glider or a single engine (small) airplane? If yes, how was your experience? If not yet, would you try it and why?

Done this once and really enjoyed it. I went with a blind organization and we were paired up with people who flew planes small aircraft I did fly one and steered and was given instructions through headphones. It was actually really fun. I was very young though they did it for kids or teens and I was like yeah, this is neat I didn’t make decisions just did the work and the kinesthetic hands on stuff. It was worth it.

Thanks for sharing. A very helpful feedback about your experience.

Yeah, not a problem. Glad it helped.

I was once offered a ride in a fighter jet - seriously. For some reason there was no rule against it, although I couldn't do it in the end because I was under the minimum weight limit for the ejection seat. Possibly there was no rule against it because nobody had ever thought to make a rule against something so mad, but apparently if only I'd been about one and a half times my actual weight I could have gone for a ride! Anti-G pants and everything.

It might have been very disappointing. I assume you wanted to feel the G force. Was there anything else interesting for you?

I would love to, but I don't know anyone with a small plane. I did ride in a small helicopter once, and it was great! The pilot died in a crash a couple of years later.

What was great in the helicopter ride? What did you enjoy the most or least?
BenandGracie 2 points 2y ago
The main thing was it was fun. The only thing I didn't like was, there is not a lot of room in those things. I rubbed shoulders with the pilot the whole time, and I didn't want to move to much and bump a control.

This is a good feedback. Thank you. In a glider, a passenger can sit in the front and the pilot in the back. You may enjoy it more. A glider doesn't have engine noise and you can feel the entire moving of the airplane.

I would totally try that, although the price seems like it would be insanely high. It seems like a super fun way to get some skills, and just try something new.

What kind of skills would you like to learn?
HeftyCryptographer21 2 points 2y ago
Idk, like geography type skills? How the controls work maybe? I haven‘t really thought about it much before.

It is important for me to understand how a blind or visually impaired person would benefit from flying or how we can make it joyful for them.
