I'm totally blind and currently working in project management. AMA if you're so inclined (self.Blind)
submitted by Prefect316
Since I frequently see questions about those seeking career paths, I just wanted to share my experience with the community. I've provided support for everything from weddings to film festivals, corporate galas to trade shows. I work remotely and utilize the Google Suite as well as an array of project management tools with a little occasional help from Aira.

If anyone has specific questions, drop them in the comments. If not, best of luck to all of you.

I am a lawyer working on large IT software development projects. One of the areas which is a struggle is the ability to accessibly read project timetables and other gant-chart style statements of work ETC. Would you mind sharing your process for that side of it?

I've been fortunate to not have to use anything that couldn't be put into Google Sheets, and that has been a savior for me. I know there are other much more robust data tools but I haven't needed to dig into them quite yet.

My in laws are in construction, when you say project management are you doing event coordinating, organizational strategy implementation, OR overseeing the building of multimillion dollar buildings?

How do you get clients, market yourself, do you work with a staffing agency for jobs?
Prefect316 [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Mostly event cordination but a little strategy implementation. My main skill set is in the former, though.

Thankfully I'm able to be comfortable based on work I get through referrals, so I haven't had need to market myself yet. When I do, though, I'd probably utilize something like LinkedIn to drum up some new business.

Hey! I’m graduating from uni this spring and I’m looking for jobs in project management. I’m really curious to know how common it is to work remotely with these kind of jobs, because working remote is one of these lovely dream of mine that will likely never come true. Also how hard was it finding a job in the field?
Prefect316 [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Remote work is way more common than you think, and if you can take any positives out of this pandemic it's that the infrastructures for lots of big companies had to work to support remote workers, and I don't see that going away when Covid does.

There are lots of personal assistant and virtual assistant jobs out there, and that's the first step to bigger things. You can build up your skills using something like Fiverr or Upwork, but I wouldn't advise hanging out there for long.

That’s actually great I never knew that was so common. I actually genuinely hope this is one thing that will stay after this whole situation ends. My dream would be to be a digital nomad, but I didn’t see it happening with my skillset.

That might make me sound like the biggest idiot in the ranch but I never knew you could do project/event management freelance. I’ll have to look into that. I do freelance translation to support myself as a student, it kind of sucks but hey money is money.

Thanks for answering!

What tools are you using to coordinate with others? I struggle with the fact that a lot of task management software is not as accessible as I wish it was (Pipedrive, Asana, etc). So I'd love to know what tools are in your toolbox for working with teams!
Prefect316 [OP] 1 points 2y ago
I use Asana a ton and although some things are not totally useable, I find the Chrome browser handles it quite well in conjunction with Jaws. I also used to use Wunderlist before it got sunsetted, and that was a very nice app. Asana did take some getting used to though.

White project management and how did you start.?
Prefect316 [OP] 3 points 2y ago
I honestly just fell into it after college. There were no writing jobs I could find and I lacked the motivation to freelance, so I ended up working on a trial basis as a personal assistant to an event planner and picked up a lot of my know-how that way. These days I'm working on becoming a copywriter, but project management pays my bills while I pursue my passions.
