Blind-Friendly Landlines or Home Phones (self.Blind)
submitted by beverlyykills
Hi!
I am a sighted individual and I have an internship where I support people who have diverse backgrounds and experiences with accomplishing their goals. A particular individual I work with is a blind senior. I am helping her get information on possible landline home phones that she can get. The problem is, I am struggling with finding phones that are specifically accommodating to people who have minimal to no vision. She currently has a jitterbug cell phone that is not accessible to her. Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations for easy to use blind-friendly landline phones?
Thank you!

If you are looking for a landline phone, the cheaper the better. If all the number buttons are in the right places, well you can't get much more accessible than that. Then on top of that, this person can just memorize where the redial and mute buttons are, and ignore the rest.

If, on the other hand, you want an accessible mobile phone, and you don't think the person is up to the task of using a smart phone, you could check out the BlindShell phones. If they do want a smart phone, you really can't do better than an iPhone, which comes with a builtin screen reader.

a number of Panasonic cordless handsets have access codes. So rather than navigate the menu to adjust ringer volume for example, you can enter a code on the phone's keypad.
Obviously you need to know the codes but being totally blind it's the best I've managed for a 3 or 4 home-phone setup.

What is available will depend on what part of the world you are in.

Have you searched for a "big button accessible home phone"?
