How do blind people select what to read on reddit?(self.Blind)
submitted by iiixkillemxiii
I know they can *use* reddit with text to speech stuff but how do they select what to listen to? does it just say everything in screen, one at a time or can the user tell it what to read and say?

Hey! I see your question has already been answered, but I wanted to ask you a favor.
When you share this information/learning experience with others, which I hope you will do, make sure to include this detail: it takes designers and developers encoding their tech correctly to make it accessible for all users. Some companies don’t do this and it’s actually against the law (ADA Title III). Despite being illegal to discriminate in this manner, it happens All. The. Time.
You are so right about technology being amazing! We just need to stir up more awareness for the need to make products, websites, and applications accessible!

Huh. I've never thought about this before. How do I test my website for accessibility?
gumbygirly1 points2y ago
A good first step would be to run it through an automatic accessibility checker like wave.WebAIM.org but keep in mine that automatic checkers can only evaluate about 30% of the total scope. I would suggest hiring a company that specializes in accessibility testing!

You’re writing to blind people :)
There’s shortcut keys, b for button, h for heading, e for edit box, things like that.
We can use these buttons to jump around webpages. We can use the control key to stop the screen reader.

thanks for the reply! i know i’m writing to blind people and that’s what amazes me. i’m not old by any means but technology has come so far as to even be able to accommodate blind people on the internet. frickin mind blowing. was just confused on the technique, so thank you!

Lol mate, we’ve been able to use computers before 1993, when I was born :)
Tech is amazing though :)

Further to all the great answers below, I have to say I've got no clue how anyone coped before the internet. I could see fine until I was 19 and so I know what it's like to be able to walk into a bookshop and browse, and honestly the internet gives you a lot of that by providing text in computer readable form.

We can look for specific posts or look through them one would look through posts like yourself look at titles if this one is interesting read it if not move on. It reads it one at a time but we can skip over it. Find different ones we like scroll down a little, etc..... pretty similar to you but we can’t see every item all at once. The reader can only read one thing one line at a time so it would be up to the user to scroll down a bit.
I would say titles are a big part of it.
I use a client which titles are only visible I read titles that are interesting then click and read which I like.

I stick to old reddit, the weird boxes of New Reddit just confuse me. RES, dark mode, large-ass print. It's pretty easy to screen-read. The links get repetitive :) I do reddit by keyboard!
