iPhone Accessibility features or Apps (self.Blind)
submitted by evilmegan
Hello Everyone,

My father suddenly lost vision last week and we are not sure if it will recover. While we are still trying to navigate the specialist follow ups, (which he can’t get to until a COVID negative test) my elderly, full time working, business owner father is struggling in ways my siblings and I can’t begin to understand.

I saw in other posts recommending audiobooks, but I was wondering if anyone can recommend how best to give him some phone ability back. He has an iPhone and I was wondering if there are accessibility features or apps that anyone would recommend that could help him with his sudden loss of independence.

Thank you in advance for any replies.

Look in settings—> accessibility. There are quite a few features there depending on what he needs. You may want to read up on ‘voiceover’ in particular. Or in ‘spoken content,’ ‘speak screen’ may also be useful.
I don’t have much experience with it (yet) but there is an app called ‘Envision AI’ that may be of interest as well...not sure if it works on the iPhone or just iPad, hopefully someone else can comment. It is a paid app, but there’s a free trial. It’s not so much for using the phone, more general help with stuff in your environment. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will chime in with other suggestions.

Small tip: if you decide to try voiceover, first go into settings-accessibility-accessibility shortcuts, and make sure ‘voiceover’ is selected. This allows you to triple tap the home button as a shortcut to turn voiceover (and whatever else you check) on and off. It makes it way easier to turn it back off if he decides voiceover isn’t what he needs.
