Resources for blind cooking/baking (self.Blind)
submitted by [deleted]
Hey all, I just started doing some cooking and was looking for some good websites with recipes that are easy for the blind. I’d really like to surprise my sighted wife by making us breakfast on Christmas morning and would especially be happy with a dish I can throw together and toss in the oven. I am also looking for some quick and easy recipes for baked goods to give our family.

On a related note, I was also wondering if anybody has some good websites they use to order accessible kitchen supplies/gadgets. I am completely blind and would welcome anything that can make my life easier/more independent in the kitchen. I definitely prefer somewhere located in Canada because of the added cost of international shipping, but remain interested in whatever’s out there. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer with any of the things mentioned in this post!

For baking, a frittata would be quite easy to make. Very few ingredients and doesn't require many gadgets. You can find the recipe here $1

For accessible cooking supplies, I use a combination of CNIB Store and Independent Living Aids $1.

I have heard other blind people say that George Foreman Grill is a lifesaver for them. $1

A good all-around kitchen tool is a cast-iron skillet. It can be a bit heavy depending on the size but it's very versatile.

I really recommend this oven glove if you're going to be baking on a regular basis. It helps me touch and pick up hot items from the oven and maintain a good grip. It's more of a glove than an oven mitt, so, you can move your fingers. $1

All the best

Thanks so much for all of this! That recipe sounds delicious and I think I will probably try it out. i’ve used those online stores before but admittedly haven’t checked them out in a while so I should probably give them another look. Great suggestion about the grill too, I had an even thought of that. I’ve actually got a couple of different gloves for the oven. One is a longer mit that goes up to my elbow and the other is an ov glove. :)

Make bacon in the oven
You could also make hashbrowns what you’re really nice
I cannot stress this enough… You need to invest in a waffle maker. I cannot for the life of me make pancakes but waffles, I am a pro. Most almost
For sites to order accessible kitchen supplies, try the braille superstore. Just type that into a search engine. It’s great!

Most breakfasts are done on the skillet, i.e. on the stove. The easiest breakfasts are oatmeal, boiled egg, or cereal, but you're not going to get a lot of credit for these. If you're willing to try cooking on the skillet, I recommend scrabled eggs and bacon. Bacon is pretty forgiving, you can practically smell your way to taking it off at the right time but watch the hot grease, and you might want kitchen tongs to remove it from the pan. You can also do bacon in the microwave, put half a pack on a paper town on a plate and put it in the microwave for five minutes or so. Put a paper towel over the bacon to avoid splatter in the microwave.

Scrambled eggs can be doine really quick and the trick is to take them off the stove before they really firm up. Crack a number of eggs into a bowl and whisk them around with a fork until they all run together (you can usually kind of feel the yolk with the fork, you want everything to be the same consistency so you can't feel the yolk anymore). Put the stovetop on low heat and wait for it to heat up for about 40 seconds or so, then start whisking the inside of the saucepan (small pot) with a whisk. The second you feel the eggs even starting to firm up, turn off the heat. You'll find they firm up really fast, serve them quickly or they will get yucky (they're not nice cold). A fried egg is also not that hard to make. The nice thing about eggs is that you can buy a lot and the dishes take so little time that you can screw up and start over pretty easily. Eggs pair well with toast which isn't too hard to make either.

Best of luck! I'm not fully blind (20/800 maybe) but I'm making Thanksgiving dinner for us all tomorrow with a pie and everything. You might want to search Google for the concept of "dump dinners" or dinenrs you make buy dumping a lot of stuff together whic works well for the blind. If you really want to prep something for a breakfast you might also look into making a breakfast burrito, you could make the insdie part the night before and warm it up and put it in the burrito.

Really good and descriptive reply.

Thanks a bunch for your answer. I’m going to search that on Google as well to see if I can find some interesting stuff. Hope Thanksgiving dinner went well for you! I’m kind of curious to hear how it went now. lol

Yeah it all came out well. I did a roast chicken and put small potatoes and carrots in the roasting pan. I also did sweet potatoes in the oven (roast vegatbles are stupid easy and taste great) and green beans on the skillet, I put red pepper flakes and garlic in those and they were tasty. The chicken had juicy meat, the skin was only a little crispy so I'll have to work on that. I also made an apple pie and I'd say it was my worst pie so far, I've made 10 apple pies and this one was a little overbaked, but my fiance still liked it and has eaten the whole thing already, she's easy to please thankfully. I am going to ask fora food processor for Chriastmas so I should be able to make a lot of dishes faster as I am pretty slow chopping everything.

Dude, that all sounds really good. Definitely a lot more than I can do right now. I think I managed to find a good breakfast recipe to try at least though so there’s that. I really want to try and learn more though, I’ve been slacking for way too long.

You can do it! :)

I use a grill not george forman type and toaster oven or. Oven and stuff like that probably air frier to but yeah, you don’t have to use the stove but sure you can if you want. I am not a great cook can use everything still have to work on the stove but otherwise good. The stove I just have to do it and get over my doubts haha! I cook some though and do mostly grill and oven.

What about a baked French toast? Ina Garten has a great recipe that seems easy and can be assembled in advance. Paired with bacon cooked in the oven (as mentioned above) I’d think you’d have a pretty sophisticated breaky to share with your wife.

Hmmmm... you had me at “French toast.” Even if it’s not on Christmas itself, I plan on doing this one. Thanks!

Hey, I really enjoy cooking. For meat, I would begin by having someone sighted and use a stopwatch so you can stop it when meat is cooked. That way, you can set a timer for approximately when the meat is cooked. I also just got a pair of bbq gloves from my OT, so I’ll report to you on that. Is there anything specific you want to cook?
[deleted] [OP] 1 points 2y ago
That’s actually a great idea about the meat that I hadn’t thought of. For now I’m mostly looking at easy stuff I can throw together quickly and just toss in the oven but I wouldn’t mind expanding my horizons eventually. I learned some independent living skills along time ago for the kitchen, but it’s been a while so I’m slowly easing myself back into things. I’ve been blind for about 19 years (I was 18 and just finished high school at the time,) but becoming more connected with others who can’t see on the Internet has kind of pushed me to finally try different things out. I think I’ve been scared for a long time to push myself and it’s something I really have to start working on.

I haven’t tried making this myself yet but my mum did this pancake thing that you bake, like a normal cake. That would be really easy. Or maybe some egg cups or breakfast muffins? It’s really good that you’re trying new things.:) feel free to PM me anytime, especially with the cooking stuff. I’m not a MasterChef but it’s something I love doing, even if it’s easy stuff.
