Any other blind producers making trap beats? (self.Blind)
submitted by rory-games
hi everyone, I just wanted to make this post as a place to share any tips. Ask any questions down in the comments and I will try to respond, I know the initial learning curve for reaper is quite steep and I would be happy to try and help anyone if I can.

Have a great day all!

I've been using FL studio for about 5 years with heavy magnification and a crazy slowe workflow but I've produced a lot of Beats for hip hop. Now that my eyesight's deteriorated I figure I need to get a better setup that actually suits my needs so I'm finally switching to Reaper and I'm really excited.

Got myself a native instruments s series midi keyboard for the accessibility features and so far I'm impressed.

I know you're here to answer questions but what are some of the better resources out there for blind music producers? I have way too many questions that need answering.

I guess if I have one question, with a DAW like Reaper that virtually comes with no built-in plugins, what plugins do you use to make trap Beats? I know the usual ones but which ones are actually accessible?

Ok, here goes:

free

TAL - noisemaker : bread and butter synth, useful for trap, EDM, and other genres. I would rate it about 80% accessible. The parameters are all labeled but the value labels are not there.

dexed: a very good free synth. It is an emulation of the yamaha dx7, and can is compatible with sysex files from it, so that means you can find a lot of presets.

Iota mini: a very nice little rompler. Extremely useful for trap and hip-hop, it comes with 50 presets and 10 trap drum kits.

Surge: nice wavetable synth. A lot of presets, but it is more advanced, and not entirely accessible.

Helm: nice free synth with lots of presets, a few waveforms, unison support, nice good effects.

paid

electra2: my one go-to synth, I didn't actually buy it yet but I plan on doing so very soon if I can. It's an extremely powerful synth with a ton of presets and all the parameters are there and labeled. You can also import samples and custom wave tables using OCR in the plugin interface.

TAL - mod: a nice synth. It's kind of noisemaker's bigger brother so to speak. It's at a reasonable price and comes with a fair amount of presets.

I have also heard good things about purity, nexus, and native instruments stuff although I havn't been able to try them myself.

And if you need any more samples and drums, you can try cymatics, w. a. production, $1, $1, and trisamples.com

Hope this helps!

Just another thing, if you can't insert midi items, you need to make a time selection with left and right bracket at the start and end in order to set a proper length for the item. This is why I was held up from truly seeing the full potential and power of reaper for over a year and a half, and I hope noone ever makes the same mistake again

And also, u/midi_man has made an absolutely fantastic pack with a ton of midi files which you can get inspiration from.

Let me know if you have any more questions and I will be happy to help :)

Oh, wow this is all really good information thank you so much.

Why wouldn't you be able to insert a midi item? Seems like a pretty basic function Reaper should be able to do, no?

Also, I'm curious, what hardware do you use? Midi keyboards? Drum pads?
rory-games [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Just a midi keyboard, nothing else. Reaper does support inserting midi items, you just have to make a time selection or you can't insert notes onto them.

How efficient would you say your workflow is at this point? How long do you think it would take you to make a super basic beat?

Seriously, I have a lot of questions

I’m not huge into trap, but I’d like to hear some of your stuff if you have any! I’m eventually going to get into music production, though more EDM/synth stuff. Also if I ever get good at singing I’m always up to collab, but right now I’m weak af. I’m sorry this doesn’t answer your question but music stuff gets me excited :P
rory-games [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Haha I'm not really sharing my stuff yet, mainly just practicing and getting enough experience to make stuff which is release-worthy for now :) I can help with EDM as well, I do quite a bit of that.
CosmicBunny97 1 points 2y ago
Oh that’s neat! I actually haven’t bit the bullet on a midi keyboard or anything just yet so I actually haven’t started. Plus probably going to start with just GarageBand for now, but want to work up to Nexus (I have some friends who use it and are also blind). What kind of edm do you do?
rory-games [OP] 1 points 2y ago
You can still use reaper with it's built-in virtual midi keyboard, I do that when I'm waiting for the bus or something to make stuff.
CosmicBunny97 1 points 2y ago
Oh wow, that’s really cool. Does Reaper work on Mac?
YoungFirey 1 points 2y ago
I am so happy I came across this! I´ve been making trap beats and uploading them to YT for about a year now using FL studio. But due to my deteriorating eyesight (I have RP) it is starting to become increasingly more difficult. I would like to look into reaper but have quite a few questions.

\- In what way is reaper more accessable?

\- Does it entail stock effects like "half time" from gross beat, reverb, delay, chorus etc. ?

\- Is it easy to add vsts like omnisphere and nexus?

I would really appreciate chatting with someone who already uses reaper and could maybe give me some insight and tips on :)

Hi everyone, are use Reaper on Mac OS X to make electronic music with hardware synthesisers. Not to hijack this thread but feel free to ask any questions also here via private message and I’ll try to help you. Leurie I have a question for you do you use electra2 to make sounds from scratch? And how easy is it to initialiser patch? Also is it accessible in Mac OS X? Thanks for your help :-)

Hell yeah for reaper!
rory-games [OP] 1 points 2y ago
eyyy
r_e_n_1_1_ 1 points 2y ago
They teach it as a course at the Canadian blind school.
rory-games [OP] 1 points 2y ago
Wow, that's pretty cool! Have you/are you going there?
r_e_n_1_1_ 1 points 2y ago
I took the course last year!
peggy2033 1 points 2y ago
Never heard of this until right now but I’m interested, where could I possibly get this and experiment with it.
rory-games [OP] 2 points 2y ago
Yeah, it's a pretty cool piece of software! You can get it at www.reaper.fm
PungentMushrooms 1 points 2y ago
You have to download and install the OSARA extension to make the program accessible, right?
YoungFirey 1 points 2y ago
I am also wondering about that because I want to switch from FL Studio to Reaper
PungentMushrooms 2 points 2y ago
So, since my last comment I downloaded and installed Reaper and you do need OSARA for it to be accessible but thankfully it's pretty easy to install and as well integrated with Reaper.

Here's a detailed explanation on how to get it all set up
