How does tactile graph paper work? (self.Blind)

How do you use tactile graph paper eg to draw a graph?

I use that for work sometimes. It comes in different sizes for the squares. You might be using it to plot points and you’re using stickers or thumb tacks on cork board to mark points. You might use wiki sticks to create a line. On the bigger sizes I sometimes write words or letters in braille when spacial organization is important though that’s rare. This is but one way to represent data. As u/CloudyBeep mentioned there is also a machine called Pictures in a Flash which takes dark lines printed on special paper and raises them when it’s heated. There are also programs that turn data points into sounds of different pitches, and sheets of aluminum to draw your own permanent lines and features. The tool that you use depends heavily on the information you are trying to convey and the needs of your audience.

These seem like sheets with raised grid squares on them.

Yeah. It’s raised line graph paper. RNIB has it listed as tactile graphics paper for some reason though. Sorry for not adding that in my original post.

Ok so here is how I dealt with the tactile graph paper.

I start by making all labels that graph will require "graph equation" "x axis" "y axis" "1 2 3 4 5" on x axis and "1 2 3 4 5" on y axis.

step 2 I cut out my labels and glue them to the graph paper.

Step 3: I get out stickers (or alternately a cork board with push pins) and mark the coordinates on the graph.

step 4: I edit my graph make sure all the coordinates make sense.

step 5: I draw a line between the points if necessary, (either using the wax wikki stick or maybe a pipe cleaner or something) I will also usually get a friend to glue gun this for me.

Having to do all that shit work is why I had not made a graph since age 16, I'm sure there must be a better way with technology and embossers etc.

I don't understand the question.
Graph paper for the sighted is the same as for the blind, just not tactile.
So we draw on it using devices that render tactily rather than using ink.

What sort of devices do you use for drawing tactile lines

Is it like liquid plastic
siriuslylupin6 1 points 2y ago
Sometimes I use a tracing wheel or a cutter it’s like a cutting wheel almost like those sowing ones and I just draw an additional line. Sometimes I will use a pen if it’s for sighted people or use dots or fold the paper.
retrolental_morose 1 points 2y ago
there are tipped pens that can leave a tactile line although it takes a steady hand not to tear the paper.
other than that, one can just use strings and pins, or glu that hardens or any other substance. Personally I like the pin approach with thin string or something, but if I need something more long-term I'll use something else.

It depends a little on the type of paper being used, but the graphic becomes tactile when the paper is heated.

How would drawing graphs eg in math work

With raised grid
CloudyBeep 1 points 2y ago
So you want to draw a graphic onto paper that has already been heated?

I don't think that's possible.

You should look into drawing the graph in other ways.

For paper like you linked, we often use graphic tape and/or sticky dots to create a graph.
CloudyBeep 1 points 2y ago
You should ask them how to use it for what you want. They may suggest using other materials to draw graphs.

In my school, in the UK, we use Minota paper and a Minolta machine. I’m not sure how it worked.

German film was also a thing, I don’t know if it’s called something else in other countries.
