Your opinion on the word "blind" being used to mean stupid, misguided, and similar? (self.Blind)
submitted by rory-games
Hi everyone.

It's not been long since I posted but this thought came to me and I was wondering what your opinions are.

I've seen quite a few people use the word "blind" to mean "stupid" or "misguided". I know it's wrong, but to me it just feels annoying to say, hey, don't use that word, it's offensive, when it's so deeply rooted in language.

If someone used it in that context would you try to tell them not to use it to mean that?

I think what happens is people just become used to it.

People who use the term Blind in a negative connotation, for the most part, are ignorant. The last 4 years have shown me that ignorance is far more dangerous and widespread than i could possibly have imagined. Blindness, like Autism, is a spectrum. Maybe some blind individuals have come to terms with their limits and accepted their disability. They may have accepted that negative connotations are "normal".

The spirit behind the word really matters as blind is a functional word in the language. Those who are Blind are often (mistakenly) judged as mentally inferior and as having a developmental disability, rather than a physical disability.

Some may feel they are not "allowed" to be offended by this misuse of terminology, as society has told them they need to "get over" it, and "accept" it. I don't think that's fair personally. If you are a member of a community or class of people, and a word is used to demean you and those like you, its natural to not appreciate that.

Thoughtfulness by allies is appreciated, and in that same spirit, asking someone directly if they are offended is truly the only way to know. Asking them in public in full view to be judged by others however, puts pressure on the person being asked, and may result in the "socially acceptable" answer. Perhaps i am speaking out of turn, as each person is unique and some may be able to disregard the validation of others in lieu of their own words.

I would say this is really a personal question, to be answered by impacted individuals who still have feelings and empathy.

Agreed

Could not possibly care less. This is one of those things that sighted people tend to get all alarmed about while actual blind people couldn't give a damn.

Such thoughts like yours sort of amuse me. Too pc for me.

It’s not like one day johnny wakes up and go.

Yeah, I am going to say blind as a bat and so that means you know I am going to fucking degrade all these blind people. I am going to start being such a prick.

You don’t wake up one day and be a prick. It’s not like someone who says you’re so gay or you’re so retarded man!!!!! Is thinking yeah, I better use this word so I can degrade and hate and demean all these people. They probably don’t really mean it. They probably use that word as an expression or just because it’s so deeply ruded.

No I wouldn't tell people not to use that.

I understand both sides here, but it does not matter if it personally does not offend you. The word is being used in a negative context in general.
It is like saying “That’s so gay.”
Yes, a word is as strong as you give it but that is how you feel about the word the public has another outlook on it and it affects us.

I don't care, and if someone ever points that out to me, I will immediate make fun of them for it.

Couldn’t give less of a shit. Both meanings are distinct and unrelated. If it’s not targeted at me (as in someone calling me stupid), I have no reason to feel anything from the use of the word blind. And that’s coming from someone who’s generally sensitive.

Words can have multiple meanings. One meaning isn't necessarily related to anotherther.. So no, this doesn't bother me.
