College math for a beginning braille reader (self.Blind)
submitted by Bookjeans
I’m going to start college level math next semester and I’m in a difficult situation.
I took math last year, but had to drop out because I couldn’t see my handwriting.
I have been trying to learn Németh in my spare time, but I worry that I will still fall behind because I’m not proficient yet.
Another option I was thinking of is doing it on the computer but I’m not sure how to set things up so I could do math properly. I’ve tried on Microsoft Word, but it takes so much time to find the right symbol I’m looking for to put into the equation.
Has anyone else experienced this or have any tips for math class?
Thank you so much!

I've been using a truncated Python syntax on Notepad++, and my Braille display is set to 8-dot computer Braille. Access Tech at my school says that should be able to get me through at least calculus, since a lot of people have similar strategies there. I tried UEB Math, but that turned into a nightmare pretty quick, and screen readers don't support it well beyond the basics. Nemeth isn't really viable on a computer, since there's no real-time translation (at least none that I know of). Some people use LaTeX, and that's cool for making your math look pretty, but it proved too involved for me to keep up in the classroom. I'm sure other people here who know a lot more about blind math than me will probably give other better solutions, but that's what I'm doing right now.

Is notepad ++ easy to learn it sounds hard from what I looked up

Not really. There’s an NVDA add-on that you can install to increase compatibility, but beyond that it pretty much just functions like any other text editor. It’s got support for tons of different languages.

Work hard to learn braille it’s possible if you want it hard enough I think traditional methods are still the best ones.
