Might not pass the physical for my new job due to bad vision. Pretty devastated.(self.Blind)
submitted by Metallbran88
So I'm pumped for my new job as a custodian at a Jr High. I go to do the physical which is pretty involved compared to other physicals for jobs I've had before, hearing test, drug test (normal no big deal), checked for hernias so far everything is great then the vision test. I'm blind in my left eye and my vision in my right eye isn't amazing but I'm used to it, I get by. I have Optic Nerve Hypoplasia. Sometimes I have to get closer to see letters from far away, but I've adapted and has NEVER been an issue in any of my past jobs working in offices or as a cart attendant for years and never once (that I saw hahaha) hit a car or person, and have been a custodian for 7 years now.
I've learned to be quick, thorough, and to double check my work when cleaning. They won't pass me unless I have prescription glasses which I don't have because they don't really help. If anything they make my vision worse. (It doesn't make sense I know but trust me) so I was only able to read the first two rows on the eye chart, and obviously nothing on the left eye. I have a monocle thing that I didn't bring with me because I didn't realize how involved this would be, so I have to go back tomorrow and hope I can see enough to pass or that they'll let me use my monocle.
TL;dr Might not get my new job at the school district because I can't pass the vision part of my physical.

ONH here too. My vision is decent. Just can't drive. Glasses don't really help me either. It's hard finding a job. I know what I'm capable of but I'm afraid of telling emplyers about my eyes because I'm afraid they won't give me a chance. I also have anxiety about being able to do certain tasks... Like using a cash register. I'm sure I could but what if I can't?
My vision in my left eye is horrible and my peripheral in that eye is bad too.
I worked at a movie theater as a janitor for 2 years and I was one of their best workers.
I find myself wearing glasses sometimes to keep others happy and questions at bay. Hard to explain my vision. People just don't get it.
Anyways, sorry for rambling but I can relate a lot.
I hope you find a solution and that they will give you a chance!

9 times out of 10 they're just checking off an arbitrary box. Show up with nonprescription reading glasses from the dollar store so they think you got new glasses and memorize the chart beforehand. If you're in the united states the most common chart starts with E then FP then TOZ. There's another one that goes E then LT but it's less common. Study the chart online. Use pneumonics to memorize. Go backwards and forwards. They usually only need a 20/40 corrected vision with both eyes but they'll start you at 20/20 line. It is what it is. You KNOW you can do the job.

Holy crap this is gold. Thanks!

Are there any laws where you live that might help.
In the UK having good eyesight would have to be a necessary part of the job and not addressable by reasonable adjustments for an employer to be able to discriminate.

Is there a way to prove to people in the future this was a while back that perhaps current vision levels is sufficient or that it is doable by people without perfect sight. May help more blind people get in to these industries.

Honestly When I went in the next day to take the test they sat me down on the opposite side of the room when no one was looking I took a picture of the eye exam shit and memorize as much of it as I could I ended up passing.

That’s good I guess. I guess the question of equality and justice is important. Which is what is essential and the issue here.
