I.D Cane or Mobility Cane?! (self.Blind)
submitted by Confident-Weakness62
So after my last reddit post a few people mentioned that I should try using a slimline cane instead of just an I.D cane. I’ve been considering it as an option after a terrible day!
We left to pick up a Christmas tree this morning and it went pretty much like this: I fell into a hole nearly 5 minutes of being there, and when we went into the area to choose a tree, I tripped over multiple tree stumps, and on our way to leave I nearly fall on my face in-front of everyone.
I even was extra careful on the stairs, and used my feet to feel the side of the stairs as to not fall down them. I haven’t considered O&M training until now, but I’m just not sure if using a mobility cane is right for me!
I feel like I have enough usable vision to navigate my surroundings, but then again it’s either I can see the ground where I’m walking or I can see what’s in front of me. Not both! So I either run into someone or trip over something. I’m sure using a mobility cane would allow me to keep my head up while also being cautious of whats on the ground ahead of me.
I want to know from you guys what would be better?

Generally speaking, a mobility cane is suggested when you are tripping on things, or bumping into things. Because that indicates you can't see things well enough to avoid. And the longer you bump/trip on this, the more likely you will get injured over time. So if you find that's the case, it's better to get the training earlier rather than later.

Try it And see if it suits you. The cane doesn't have to be used 24/7 just in unfamiliar places

I would say look into some O&M training. They will help you decide what is best for you!

Use a mobility cane or continue to fall over. YOur choice but mobility training can be good for you when you can't see in the dark. I'm totally blind though so my powers are different from yours.
