Hey guys, I am blind and I recently got a guy dog. Really love him, he’s super cool. His name is buddy and he is awesome. Recently, I was thinking about the age old question of, guide dog or white cane. I asked a couple of my friends their reasons for getting a guide dog or just sticking with your white cane. And they gave me a bunch of different answers. Just some thing I was thinking about and wondering if you guys could share with me your opinions and which one you think is better. Also give me your reasons why. Thanks guys and stay safe with this whole Covid thing.

It is a really personal matter. I know some people who want a guide dog, but they don't have the capacity for taking care of one. I know others who have guide dogs, but there are a few places where they can't bring their dogs (she loves roller coasters, and there is no friggin' way a guide dog is going on that). So she normally uses a guide dog and switches to a cane for those specific areas.
I've have some people refuse service to a guide dog team before, but that's been relatively rare (3 times over 10 years).

In the state of New Jersey refusing access to someone with a guide dog will result in a $250 fine for the first incident, $500 for the second and $1000 for the third and subsequent incidences.

I'm a cane guy all the way. I've tried both, and after working with him for many years, I can flatly say never again. There were some advantages to be sure, but the cons outwayed the pros almost from day one. I'll never forget my first day of English lit that semester of college after I got my dog. He licked up a big puddle of antifreeze in the parking lot and puked all over my professor's shoes as I made a mad dash for the classroom door. Bright pink vomit everywhere. I am fortunate enough to be a decent cane traveler, and I'd rather have to ask someone where the correct door is rather than take a dog into the store. I recognize that dogs work for some people, and I applaud them for finding what works, but never again. It was a literal shit show the whole time.

Sounds really fun especially the antifreeze. Yeah, a cane can’t misbehave.

Cane Less work, and don't have to worry about where and where not to take it. Also don't have to worry about taking it outside when I'm out somewhere, just chuck it in your bag til you leave for example. Not that anybody really goes anywhere anymore though, lol.

I hate using the cane that is why I got my seeing eye dog. They are not for everyone though for some people either can’t afford them or just don’t wanna put in the work. I personally think they are awesome. Having my dog boosted my confidence immensely. Another added benefit is how safe I feel when I am out and about. Then again I do have an 80 pound German Shepherd. LOL

I'm never getting a guide dog. Too much to take care of and I don't need the discrimination.
Revenant6243 points2y ago
The positives definitely outweigh the negatives of having a dog. I don’t get a lot of discrimination because of the dog. I do get it once in a while, but not that bad. if you’re in United States the law is on your side

I am and I've heard horror stories.

Personal preference.
I think using a dog like that is not as ethical. I also think that it’s too much work a cane does not poop and pee and need walking and it doesn’t need management or other things. Nor does it misbehave when it’s not working. Also I am afraid of dogs. I think a cane is sufficient. I am also very physical and tactile.

Cane. Because of the country I live in, guide dogs are terribly expensive, and the law and people are not yet adapted to them. Besides, they would surely steal it from me.

Cane. Dogs smell. Also they poop.

My Seeing eye dog just had to be put to sleep a couple of weeks ago. While there are some downsides to having a dog, the positives outweigh them in my opinion.

We worked as a team for nine years until I had to retire him as ironicly, he started losing his vision. I was in situations where the dog saved me from getting lost;like getting across a massive parking lot. With a cane, that could have been a real disaster! Also, when I've been places where the sidewalks weren't shoveled yet, the dog had no problem getting us where we needed to be without ending up in a yard or in the road etc. If there is enough snow to where you can't feel what's under the snow with your shoes or boots, a cane won't be much use. Also, while I'm a pretty fast cane traveler, my guide dog was really fast!

On top of being a great four legged friend, I'm pretty sure I was in situations/places where people didn't mess with me because I had an 85 pound dog by my side.

These are just a few examples of why I prefer a guide dog.

Not sure if my answer counts here seeing as I don’t need a cane most of the time. But if I were to qualify for a guide dog, I’d probably get one. I think I would feel a lot more confident getting around with one. It’s not a person, but because they’re trained to sort of make judgements on how safe it is to go places (i.e. crossing the street) I would feel a lot safer I think to have a guide dog. Plus I want to get a dog when I finish school anyways haha!
ginsenshi1 points2y ago
FOr me I prefer using a guide dog, its faster and having his wonderful memory helps me out alot when I can't find my husband if he's gone ahead of me for some reason.
Besides I'm slow with a cane always have been

I never understood people who say a guide dog should go to someone who needs it more.
The schools breed a lot of dogs someone is not going to go without a dog if another person is matched with a dog. If it doesn't work out the dog is rematched as long as there under 5 years old. At least that's how Southeastern does it I Believe.
