Christmas family games to play with blind family member(self.Blind)
submitted by overheadfool
My mother is blind and we've rarely played family games together but last Christmas we stumbled upon the Alexa trivial pursuit and really enjoyed it, it was very inclusive. I was hoping to find other options for this year - physical, digital games, whatever, I'd be really grateful for suggestions. Thanks!

Is your mom a Braille reader? There are Braille Uno cards now and that’s a fun one. There are also Braille playing cards that you can play tons of games with. Alexa also has a name that tune kind of game that is pretty fun and has a lot of decades of music to choose from. Just my thoughts.

Thanks, yes she is. Uno is a great suggestion actually. Googling now!

if youre in the US, your local Target might even sell braille uno in the store! mine did last year.

Now, the Mattel ones are on Amazon.

My friend told me they played pin the tail on the donkey but it was pin the star on the christmas tree. I thought it was an interesting thing to play.

Many agencies for the blind sell braille Uno cards, but if you're in the US, Mattel has some official ones that you can buy.

I'm in the UK, just bought some braille UNO cards from the RNIB, thanks for the heads up.

the Alexa idea us what I was going to say, I played with with relatives and then introduced it to my blind friends and they loved it (and destroyed me at it lol)

We played dominos one year with bumpy dots on the actual dominos.
overheadfool [OP]2 points2y ago
Also good, thank you! Hadn't thought of that but it's so obvious now you mention it.

Just remembered i took some fabric glue and glued dots on cards for my friend when we played things like spades, uno and go fish or war.
He cant read braille so i compromised where i could and he just counts the bumps.

Also looking for tactile dominos now, I'm pretty sure they're common place now I think about it, thank you for the suggestion!

Hi! I've tried DnD (with a sighted game master), but I guess role playing in general could be fun. I also suggest the boardgame Sherlock Holmes Consulting Detective (it's a narrative investigation game). Both are suited for a decent amount of players

Left Right Center has very tactile dice. Yahtzee also works in this vein. Also S/O to $1

Are you looking for 2-person games, or games a big group could play together at a family gathering?
overheadfool [OP]1 points2y ago
Casual family games really
YoYo314151 points2y ago
Maybe Taboo? It’s a fun, casual game for big groups. You could either Braille a subset of the cards for when it’s her turn to give clues, or she could always be a guesser on her team.

You can play othello easily by adding puff paint or another texture to one color of pieces. Same for checkers now that I think of it. You can also get Braille scrabble or put Braille labels on the deluxe scrabble pieces (the board is indented). They sell the NFB branded Braille uno at target in stores. There’s also a board game called nyctophobia where all the players have to wear blindfolds- so I’d imagine that one might also be doable. Obviously the cheapest games are the ones you can modify yourself, but maxiaids sells a decent assortment. More out there, but if you have some cash to burn, yogibo came out with a product called “jogoball” which they are marketing as an “audio party game console.” I would be interested in a blind/vi review of the product, it sounds cool.
ETA: you can also google Alexa game skills- I’m sure there’s more where that came from.

You can get Braille Playing cards. So Poker canasta and others are playable

Past christmas now but what about this one? Maybe a scrabble set I have a braille scrabble set it’s a fun game. What about trouble oh what does game world call it now I have to find it they don’t call it trouble they call it something else you go around the board as one of four colors and you roll a dice.
I’ve also seen a braille monopoly board.
What about diceworld. Or gameworld you can play there in person or else you can even play casually now both would need the app and you can play people.

Ducky Ducky Quack Quack. Everyone is seated apart from one person. The standing person is blindfolded and holds a cushion. They are spun in a circle and then using the cushion the blindfolded person finds a lap, puts the cushion on the lap and sits down. The blindfolded person says "ducky ducky" and the person they are sitting on responds with "quack, quack". The quacker can disguise their voice in any way they like. The blindfolded person then has to guess who they are sitting on. If they guess correctly they switch places. If they guess incorrectly they have to find a new lap and guess again.

That's a great one to include my young daughter in as well, thanks!

Yep, lots of fun for the little ones. Especially hilarious to watch Dad sit on the 10 year old.
